Im looking for a good kit for my upcoming 727 rebuild. Still on the fence of either a High compression 360 or stroke it to a 408. The car will be a street car. Has anyone had good luck with this kit from B&M? I currently have a shift kit in my current 904, which this kit has. But wanted to see if anyone else has used it in a performance build?
How are the clutches and steels?

This is the kit in question

Thanks

Summit kits are good, usually have a std &/or Hi Perf kit to choose from.

I don't see but the one band. I don't know man. I like makin sure I get Borg Warner clutches.....of some kind. Doesn't say what those are and I'm pretty sure B&M doesn't make them.

I used that same kit many years ago when rebuilding my 727. You will need to purchase the low/reverse band separately. You will also need to consider if the bushings in your trans need to be replaced. They do not come with that kit. I did not replace my bushings and the trans ran OK, but I should have replaced them and had a trans shop press them in correctly. It was a fun project (rebuilt the trans on a dining room table while in the Philippines during a typhoon!). Lots of videos out there on 727 rebuilds. Take your time. Inspect every part. Lube as you go. Be sure the work area is REALLY clean. Have fun!

Edit: I had to make some tools to get the job done. If you have a press, then you will be ahead of where I was. The front clutch has a plate that must be depressed so you can remove the snap ring. That was the one that was the most challenging for me.

Go to Trans Parts Warehouse. They have VERY complete kits for reasonable prices. Located in Nevada. Name brands as well.

Though I have rebuilt the 727 in the past, I will be having a shop build my current one. I purchased the parts from various sources (including a higher performance governor). The shop I now use has built several 727's for our family over the years and does a great job. Be sure to invest in a quality custom torque converter that is properly matched to your intended use based on your engine/rear/tires. Taking a trans out is not an easy job, so you won't want to do it more than once!

A&A puts together kits with high quality clutches and bands.... they offer different levels of performance depending on use. Call and talk to them. John Cope can do the same. I'd support those folks....they are the core of the 727 industry as we know it.

That kit shown uses a 5.0 lever (supplied). You have to use their supplied band and keep them together.... I don't know if you want to go that way, especially on the street??? Also, that kit is pricey IDB.

I would stick with the 904. You can get good durability with a quality 904. Not as much as a 727, but still good. Less weight, less drag and more room.

Thanks for the input, I would like a kit that has bushings as they look ok but I want to replace them anyway. I would also like to get new thrust washers and a low reverse band. Looks like I will need to piece a good set together.

I know what you mean, I rebuilt my fist 904 last year. Always thought I would hate transmission and never had any experience with them. Took it apart and thought I hope I know where everything goes. There was a long video series on youtube showing the assembly and reassembly. Really helped. After the rebuild wanted to do another! Transmissions are not bad and fun, just need to make sure stuff is in clearance. Yes I have a press and know what your talking about, I also bought the tool that compresses that piston to get the snap ring out. My dad is a machinist and has an endless supply of scrap steel shaft so he can make whatever bearing, bushing installer Ill need.

Must of worked right because my whiplash 318/904 setup is running great for the past year and I like to beat it up time to time.

Good for you! Many will not venture to try something like that, but as you found, it is not difficult. It is messy, but hey! I've seen some of the work that "professionals" did and was shocked. Have fun!

It is, im in the cleaning my parts stage at the moment, and waiting for the weather to cool off here before I start. Not the best idea to build something like that when your sweating the whole time. I know what you mean, I've watched a youtube channel called Precision Transmission, and it really shows you how simple transmissions actually are. But also shows you how some people who spent thousands to have there trans built only to have them fail down the street. Or the ones that got it rebuilt for $500! You get what you pay for.

I see you're in Indio. I was stationed at March AFB from '74-'77 before moving here to Texas. Sure does get hot there, especially when the Santa Anna blows that hot desert air in!

WIT Transmission has a ton of good stuff as well. Once you start reading up on the trans and doing some research, you'll likely find that a "complete kit" is really not for you. You'll want a Super Sprag, billet servo possibly, maybe a different band and clutch package, etc.

A&A for sure has bushing and thrust washer sets available as well. Be careful with bushings tho.... you can do more damage than good... only change the ones that need it. Best to get a rebuild book for best info... I know some bushings always need changed, but some take literally no abuse.

It boggles my mind that people do all that hard work of taking the transmission out and putting it back in and pay someone to do the easy work of rebuilding it LOL... We are fortunate enough to have a couple transmission supply warehouses here locally. I called the other day for a 727 transmission I'm going to rebuild for my truck and they said a standard quality kit for a 727 is $102 and the heavy duty kit was just under $200... What I found from buying kits online is they usually are competing with each other and don't put enough parts in sometimes. Like some of the same transmissions have more clutches and steals than others so they put the lesser amount so they can have a more competitive price. Then you end up having to purchase yet another disc and another clutch to fill out your pack...
I like using local supplier so if I need something I can just go down and get it..
Again my advice to anybody doing a transmission is to do it yourself that way you know it's done right... Mine is currently sitting on my two foot by 4 ft extra bench that I will build it on when the weather turns...

Watch the video as you rebuild the trans....and it is FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEeeee

Sure there is.....He said the bushing kit is inexpensive...and the bushing drivers are expensive.....take your parts and bushing to a local tranny shop and let the experts do that.....lol

Yeah, you're right. I recall that. That is what I would do anyway!
