Catalytic Converter on a 65 Slant 6?

-
Adding a cat is not that bad of an idea. It will greatly reduce NOx (oxides of nitrogen) which definately has a stink to it. Air injecton makes them even better, but not really necessary if you install it close to the manifold, and keep the tune up spot on. Some type of shielding from the floor is a good thing. Modern cats will have a very negligible effect on horsepower if any. Some pretty darn fast, quick, and clean cars have them.
Thank you! I'm liking the sound of this to help reduce the carbon footprint and environmental impact of driving my '64.

If you really want to clean up the exhaust, get rid of the carburetor and install a fuel injection system .

FiTec offers a 1 barrel , 2 barrel and 4 barrel system that are self learning . Of course you will also need a fuel system upgrade .

The result will be cleaner exhaust , better mileage , better performance and easier starting year round.

Don’t install a Cat unless you do this first .

There is no carbon footprint unless you're driving the car in a poor state of tune as a daily driver. The amount of pollutants your properly tuned car emits is minimal if you drive it a few times a week. Classic cars are a tiny percentage of the cars on the road. Your pollution is equivalent to a drop of water in the ocean.

I would NEVER "add" a cat to anything unless smog requires it and under certain conditions they can generate dangerous levels of heat and create smell on their own

Check car for leaks. ANY leaks through holes gaskets etc into the floor and trunk of the body are suspect. Leaks in the exhaust are suspect

Be diligent about checking that the timing is actually where you think it is, and re-check your idle mixture settings. If you can not kill down the idle speed by turning in the idle mixture screw, then there is something wrong getting too much fuel into the engine.

Transplant a MB or VW diesel into it and convert it to run on old fry grease. That "Grease-el" will smell like McDonalds fries. EFI will clean that smell up and a cat running on an EFI does not get hot enough to melt a generic heat shield placed above it as it hardly ever introduces unburned fuel into the cat, what makes them run hot. And then there is the EAZY fix. Get an IMPCO 200 series Propane mixer and run an RV size bottle of Propane in the trunk. Certified clean burning even in CA. We run them inside our warehouse all the time. Fast lane stickers!

Thanks for the feedback and positive discussion. I'm not 'buying' anything other than my own research, part of which is reaching out to others like yourselves. As to the 'drop in the ocean' analogy, given that that ocean temperatures have risen over 1.5 degrees F in my lifetime and are accelerating, and that sea levels are predicted to rise between 1.3 - 2.6 ft this century, I'm of the belief that every little bit helps.

This may sounds crazy to many... I am trying to figure of ways to have my daily driver 65 Dart GT not smell terrible.

Has anyone added a Catalytic Converter to your pre-smog Slant 6?

Or does anyone have any recommendations on how to make it burn cleaner? I have electronic ignition, new exhaust, it is tuned up really well, has no mechanical engine problems - it just smells like a old lawnmower when I am sitting in traffic.

Do you have your PCV valve and hoses in place and is the PCV valve in good working shape? If not fix that first, then look for exhaust leaks.

Driving my '62 Valiant in the summer heat of Tucson and Phoenix I too have smelled an odd odor while sitting at traffic lights. Unsure of cause at first but finally figured out it was my BO!! Not so bad since I increased my shower frequency from monthly to weekly! :)

The sun rises in the East, even for those who don't believe it.

Dropped items fall down, even for those who don't believe it.

And even for those who don't believe it, burning a U.S. gallon of gasoline creates 20 pounds of CO2. Doesn't matter whether the gasoline is burned in a '61 Valiant without a catalytic converter, in a '21 Chrysler Pacifica with a full brace of up-to-the-minute emission control technology including a catalytic converter, or a metal pan on a concrete sidewalk.

None of this is political or debatable.

What does Sweedish gas come out to? Never knew we had heavy gas.:poke:

Sorry Dan just had to!

Carbon footprint? Really? How many cars have been built, driven and scrapped since 1964. By keeping the old iron on the road and not sending it to be crushed and being turned into a tesla, that car has done a lot less harm to our enviroment.1/100th of a new car. Moreso if its comparing to the salted highway type of car. A fine tuned automobile the adding a cat wont change a thing. Except burn more gas.

Dan,

I had whole house solar panels installed in June of 2018. As of today, I have saved 66,423 lbs of carbon from being generated. I have ZERO guilt for driving my gas cars.

I never said anyone should have any guilt for driving their gasoline-powered car.
