360 vs 383

Lol! The stroke favors the torque,...not! To be sure, if You have low squeeze, it's gonna dog....but that goes for both. My 383 was a '66, so I was ahead with closed-chamber heads and 9.2:1 comp., I put 1.74 Exh valves in and used the porting templates from DC. With an old-school Eddy DP4B, a run of the mill Holley 750 VS, 284/.484 DC cam & headers, I was doing 102+mph in a car that weighed in at about 3700#. Budget, re-ring with the original pistons, rods, crank, stock OE valves, green Hemi valve springs, used headers, shim head gaskets. I love SBs in A-Bodies, but 383 over 360 all day long, there's not that much diff in weight in a big car low-deck to LA360. X heads will out-flow B/RB heads, bone stk., but not all, and BUDGET seems to keep getting lost in this thread...price good X-heads lately?
X's an J's go cheap now days,..errybody tossing them for aluminum!!!

I bet that worked really well. How much compression and what kind of vehicle did you have it in? What transmission and gears? Did you ever get it to the track?
It was one of the engines I used in my 67 fastback. It has a torque flight and at the time I was using a B+ M 3500 with 4.57 gear.
Had ported 915 heads with Holley street dominator and carter comp 750. compression was 11.1 or so. we didn't measure back then 1979/ 80 lol In strip tune with slicks it would run consistent 11.50's at 114.

junkyard 360 magnum , clean up the bores and polish the crank yourself , all stock 9.1 to 1 shortblock under $500. EQ magnum heads, china airgap , reground roller cam ,400hp under 2 grand , you will never find a 383 or 360la core that doesńt need hundreds of dollars in machine work , new pistons ,bore ,balance etc.

Mostly since I am accumulating magnum 360's for free to super cheap I'm probably going with the 360. Especially in a street car. Seems like 3k gets me a pretty damn good small block.

Don't forget cheaper easier overdrive auto options for the small block as well.

When using a b engine i try to stick with 400's RB's a 440 and la/magnums a 360. Just because my budget is tight and displacement makes a difference for low buck builds.
Sorry if too far off topic but if I was serious about going fast and don't mind the weight of the big block 3k gets me a mild 440 with more potential than the 3k 383.
