Not sure if I should have posted this in the Trans section but finally got the car on the road
Trans overheated in 2 miles 240°
It is 727 and has a PTC 4500 stall all the other parts are from CRT reverse manual valve body external Trans cooler i’ll let it cool down and then drove it back home seemed like it was not shifting all three gears thoughts

It is just a L cheapo but are used to run it in the same location with my old set up and never had an issue

Double check the bands.... look for fried or aerated fluid, and for sure reposition that cooler so it actually gets air flow!!

I'd pull the hoses at the trans end and make sure that cooler and lines setup arent pinched or damaged internally somehow. I have seen hoses delaminate internally without leaking externally.

Overheated in 2 miles? What were you doing? How many RPM. Newer converters are pretty specific for application?

Were you driving up hill at 2500 rpm in third gear? Then I can understand it getting hot.

a friend spent 4K for a CRT 904 for, racket racing. The trans smoked hinges in 12 runs. Cope said, “I thought I fixed my valve body problems!” Problem was that CRT didn’t fix it. So he had to get a new valve body and rebuild the trans.

CRT didn’t do squat to help him after spending 4K

The cooler lines do not go through the radiator just threw the cooler I did think about dropping the pan tomorrow and double checking the bands I do agree I should probably move the trans cooler however it was there with my last set up at never had an issue fluid looks good smells good I was driving on a flat Road maybe I 3000
RPMs I hope it’s not a problem with the valve body that sucks that he did not take care of your Buddy

If that's true, that's really shitty.

No first time with the 4500 stall i used to run a TCI 3500

Reason I ask is that's a lot of converter slippage at low speeds, slippage = heat in my book

Are you saying that after getting it hot it’s not shifting into third, or was it not shifting correctly right from the start?

Took it 2 miles to miles to a buddies house shifted fine did not overheat was hanging for about an hour then to father-in-law‘s 2 more miles and got hot 240 than let it cool for an hour and drove home shortcut 1 mile that’s when it was not shifting correctly

Half of the cooler is in front on the radiator bracket , not flowing air through that.
Also check out the Derale pan with the flow through cooling tubes.

Cheap **** way small cooler that's half blocked. I don't know what else to say, really.

Does continued driving at 3000 rpm with a 4500 converter sound like it will work out very long? Don’t they just build heat like crazy if driving below the stall speed? I think it needs to be above the stall speed to not make so much heat.

Took it for a drive this morning
It’s not shifting out of first if you let off the throttle and wait a minute it will shift sometimes also noticed when I got back I put the car in neutral and I can barely roll it until it cooled down then I could roll it but was still hard

I don't think the problem is cooler related. Overheating in 2 miles sounds like slippage...clutch or band slippage. Cannot think of anything else that can generate that much heat that quickly.

Are your brakes hanging up and causing the converter to slip?

How is it not shifting correctly? What exactly is it doing?

I've driven several loose converters on the street and never had any issues. My current converter flashes 5600 and works fine on the street.

I have run that type cooler on 4 diff. hot rods , never had a problem with them.
And I do have this one ran thru the rad. first , then to the top of the cooler ,and out the bottom, back to the trans. .
if the engine is running at the proper temp. , then the trans should run a bit cooler this way .---working for me .
I f his cooler is`nt flowing poorly, I`d blame it on the wrong convertor for a street car !!
Is the convertor the only thing he changed ?
Also prefer the cooler be mounted side ways , instead of up-down-----

Hey thanks for all the replies
So I pulled the valve body out last night found out bands are super loose and worn down also noticed I must have forgot to put the accumulator rod in because that piston was sitting all the way up pulled it out and it was dry and like no fluid has been passing through I wonder if this is the cause for overheating and then slippage causing the bands to wear down going to pull the trans out tonight and tear down
Thoughts
Also this was a complete build I did not just torque converter

Did you ever check line psi before this?
Kick down eliminated , right?
Glad you're able to track it down
