Hello all just thought I would throw this in to the mix of knowledge around here would DW340P ever end up in a 69’ Cuda? “D” being a 68 build date code. Also does anyone know how to decode a 69’ 727 tranny?

Well Chrysler started building the next years cars the following year, usually in August, so an August to December built car would have that year's date on it. Show a picture of the drivers side stamping just above the trans pan rail and a few of us can decode it...

Also kinda curious about the casting I’m

Because it’s a 68 code wouldn’t the code be located on top of the bellhousing mount area? The oil pan rail number is non existent?? Reason for asking since I haven’t located the number other than the one at the front of the engine. I just read about the other possible location so I will check the bellhousing area when I get home today.

Well if it was built in late 68 for a 69 then it would be stamped on the pad above the oil pan, which was not there on a 68. If it is a 68 engine then it would be on the drivers side bellhousing flange between the starter and the oil sending unit.

D is 1967 model year, not calendar year, so it was built for a '68.

Look for a partial VIN on top of the bell housing mating flange near the base of the distributor.

Also..... what are the two sets of numbers after the DW 340 P ?

Thanks for that I’m pretty sure my 340 got swapped for a 68 then, I’ll know for sure when I get back to the house this evening

2581 is 1969 model year......

Can you get a photo of the full serial number and post it?

It would also be good to know that casting date and to see if it has a full or partial VIN stamped on the passenger side pad by the oil pan rail.

there is no machined pad on the oil pan rail. Here’s a pic of the front of engine code

2581 is August 21, 1968 so 1969 model year...

ohh crap so that means there is still a possibility that my numbers will be matching? Honestly I will be truly shocked if that is the case not that is terribly important but it would be a pleasant and welcome surprise.

You are looking in the wrong place, it is a 3/4"x3" machined pad, show a picture of each side of the engine in it's entirety and the casting date. Here is an example...

Okay the cast date on the side is 6/22/67 that pic with the small arrow and circle of dots near the top of the screen is just below the cast date. I will take another pic of that side when I get home. Those boards of wood you see near the bottom of the screen are a cradle that the pan sits in and catches on the oil pan rails

6/22/67 would definitely be a 340 made in 67 for a 68 car that would probably be coming off the assembly line very early in the model year; likely August 67. That engine could not possibly be correct for a 69.

That’s kinda where my line of thinking was. I guess I should just be grateful it’s a 340 like what was originally envisioned. Thank you for your input on this as there is no secondary engine I.D to be found on this block, not near the bell housing nor the oil pan rail.

Just out of curiosity if this is a 67 block which came with “x” heads (still installed) is it possible they did not add the second serial number? There isn’t even a blank machine pad where a number should have been stamped

Here’s the x head castings, not sure if they are the original x heads or replacement x heads but there are definitely similarities.

May be a service replacement engine.
Replaced under warrant by a dealer?
Just spit balling

That would be my guess also. Probably got a short block and put your heads on it, look for a hole near one of the freeze plugs that a parts number tag would have been attached to...
