Thought I had more time!

Yea. Agreed.
Alot of north east cities have red light cameras. They had a new one in my old town and a guy petitioned them because the yellow was too quick, (apparently there's a standard amount of time required by the DOT). He was right and they waved his ticket. They extended the yellow light time as well.
The problem is they can definitely cause accidents. People lock up the brakes on yellow.
Another issue is that emergency vehicles can't get through because nobody wants to slow roll a red light to let them pass.
It's a big problem since it's $ greed, a money maker for municipalities.
My ticket in NY was mailed from the Midwest somewhere, the company that reviews the video footage, and issues the fine, supposedly gets a big chunk of the fee.
Total BS
I hate the damned things, both red light cams and photo radar. Here we have mobile units that are mounted in vehicles that will be parked in random locations, often near playgrounds or schools, frequently have one parked a couple blocks from my house, there is a playground there. I don't mind them around the playgrounds or schools, those make some sense, but we also have a couple of portable units that look kinda like utility boxes, those will be set up anywhere, typically behind a post or bus stop bench where it's all but impossible to see. That's all about the cash and nothing to do with safety.
