522 RB Build

-
Got the oven going yesterday--Blower motor and a burned fuse later it works very well. First test was turning a set of polished aluminum Summit covers into Black Wrinkle finish-cured @ 200F 1hr.

Coated the pistons for the 522 today and they turned out pretty well. Time will tell how they hold up. J.Rob

did you heat the valve covers a little before you sprayed them?

did you notice increased durability of the paint afterwards?

Try baking engine brackets with common cheap spray paint. I think you’ll notice the paint ends up tougher, less imperfections, less fisheyes that you get with today’s lousy spray paints. Plus everything is bolt on ready in about an hour.

I think that oven can really pay benefits.

No heating before, just the recommended cure @200F for an hour. Yes I agree that most painta should be heated for curing, some auto MFG,s pass the shell through a heating chamber after paint. J.Rob

They will if you show me! Just keep posting about those '346's please. J.Rob
There is a gentleman having a 512 built by my friend in Idaho Falls. The gentleman wants the engine looking stock with his 6-bbl and wants us to do the 906 heads.

Cody says, "Make me real happy to do these heads......and if he doesn't like the price.....that will make me real happy too........'cause I've got lots of other things to do."

The point? Oh yeah the point! Make sure you are getting what you believe it is worth to mess with iron heads.

Trying to make these Bulldogs use able again by sleeving 5 pushrod pinch breakthroughs. It went very well, the heads should be finished by the end of the week. J.Rob

I guess since you’re posting about the Bulldog heads in this thread means the high level reworked iron heads are no longer in the mix for this build.

I’m thinking a vacuum leak. But maybe the washer will seal it good enough at the top. Kim

This is the pushrod tube not a headbolt tube. I applied a small amount of epoxy around the external edges of the tube as well as a thin coat in the port itself. Belzona 1111. J.Rob

Plenum porting done, pushrods in and a pair of roller rocker needle bearings are found to be bad. Anyone know a source? 1.062" od .875 id" .375 width or length. J.Rob

Dave, that’s how I got it. I sold it to Jesse. The guy told me he was running it on a B block with I don’t remember which heads. He said so he can use it on either block. Idk. That’s what he told me. Kim

Just performed a quick 3500-5000 rpm test and I've got some work to do. 544HP 610TQ Had to use a Holley 1000AN while I wait for the customers carb and it starts weird, and loads weird, the Rock Auto distributor has a never ending advance curve so it has almost no initial timing once I set total at 36, so it idles very poorly, and to top it off I have a small oil leak at the corner of the timing cover and oil pan. I'm hopeful if I work on these issues I can find a lot more power-especially torque. J.Rob
