Im in the preshoping phase of looking for a new everyday driver. I really want a new or newer full size truck and shopping between the big three the Ford really has caught my attention for a few different reasons. One the ecoboost, iv always been a v8 kinda guy and never even considered the smaller base engines but the 2.7 and 3.5 eco boost puts out some really impressive numbers out performing their own v8 5.0 coyote in pretty much every category including towing and mpg. The 2.7 makes 325hp and 400lb ft torque the 3.5 makes more with 375hp and 470lbft torque but the 2.7 does it at a much lower rpm the other thing that I really like and alot of ppl will think im crazy but is the aluminum body! Living in the rust belt everything here rusts eventually I have friends new fords chevys dodges Toyota etc that already have rust in the bed. One of my good buddies bought a 2017 chevy brand new and the cab corner is already bubbled. For this reason I think the aluminum body is a great thing. No more rust. Anyone here own one have any first hand experience with them ? Im looking at a 2019-2021 i want the 2nd generation ecoboost iv read they worked alot of bugs out from the 1st gen. Let me know what you guys think.

Nope. But my next truck will be a 2.7 ecoboost. I have done some work on one for a customer. Put larger compressor housings and wheels, catless downpipes, full exhaust, larger ic, injectors, tune, etc. Puts down over 500 rwhp and massive tq. and still gets 22-24mpg cruising.... Can't beat that

Those aluminum bodies are very weak though. One of Dad's friends caught his bed on a mailbox and it ripped it open like a tin can. Cost him like 5,500 bucks to repair a small section. We saw some issues with the older ones, and my inlaws have a newer one that constantly has issues. Just my two cents for whatever their worth.

stay off the backroads, you will end up on the roof. Way too light in the back. And body repairs? Lots of money.

Whenni had a govt job i built ramps for snowmobiles, and a raised floor so ramp would slide under the sled sitting on the deck. The safety department said it changed the center of gravity, got shot down as the extra weight made truck more stable on gravel roads.

I have a 2016 with 2.7 ecoboost. It has 70k on it so far and has been a good truck. Lightweight and gets 20-24mpg, and about 15mpg towing.

That is a concern for me as well as the light weight in the rear. I was concerned about hydroplaining with the light rear end.

I’ve never had any issues with hydroplaning in my truck. I did put a hole through my tailgate when a trailer came unattached though, punched right through the aluminum. Also put a spray in bedliner in it to help protect the bed from getting all dented up.

Im pretty sure that would happen with any of them I got a big crack where I backed my tailgate into a trailer with my ram. Its a dent and a crack not a hole but same difference lol.

My friend Matt had a 2018 with the little 3.5 twin turbo ecoboost. He had nothin but trouble with it. Coolant leak after coolant leak. They use so much plastic in the cooling systems now, they are super prone to leak. He got tired if it and sold it.

My brother in-law owns a 2017 Ford 150, he loves it, bought new. I don’t know the engine. A coworker just bought a 2021 Ford Ranger with a 2.3 EcoBoost turbo. He loves the great gas mileage and towing capabilities.

There is alot of plastic up front i noticed that myself. I've never owned a new or newer truck I really want one tho I just want something reliable if im gonna spend all that money I want something nice reliable and get my moneys worth. Iv only ever owned one new(ish) vehicle and It was junk me and my wife bought one of the new generation mustangs when they came out in 05 I loved them because it looked like the old ones ford started that retro era in cars and i was sold we got a 05 model early in 2006 (I think we bought it in March) it had 5000 miles on it so it was basically new it was a dealer pilot car or something like that but anyway we had nothing but trouble out of it one thing after another ended up trading it in 09. It was alot of fun but I swore id never get another new ford but here I am again attracted to these new f150s lol

The towing capability is what drew me in initially. I was looking at new silverados and was reading reviews and saw where the 150s had best in class towing payload and mpgs. Then I started reading about the ecoboost I was sold lol. I really want to want a ram but the notorious hemi lifter issues push me away. Im not one of those that buy a new truck every 5 years whatever I get is gonna have to last 20 years 200k miles at least I can't be replacing engines and lifters every 50k miles. The ecoboost is relatively new but i haven't seen anything bad about failures with them. Heck there are guys on the f150 forums tuning them and get 500hp out if them with bigger turbos and tuners

A friend of mine works for Asplundh Tree Co. and had an aluminum F150 extended cab as a company truck. He got T boned in it by a drunk woman who ran a red light, and every window in it exploded because the cab bowed up so bad. It wasn't that hard of a hit, and he didn't get hurt.....but had to pick glass out of his ears and mouth. Luckily, he still had his safety glasses on because he had just left one of his crews, and didn't get any glass in his eyes. As far as the eco boost, people I know that had them either loved them or hated them. More hate than love....and all of them were Ford guys. One guy is a bass fisherman, and has a big bass boat with all the stuff them guys need, plus a 900 HP outboard to get to the fish first....lol. He said he hated having to keep it spooled up all the time to get it to pull like his old truck with a V8. The guys that just use them for ride around trucks and to haul an occasional 2 x 4 home from Lowes love them. If I were to buy a new truck right now, it would either be a Dodge with a 6.4 Hemi, or a Chevy with a 6.0 LS. Good luck with whatever you get.

I want a 6.4 or 6.0 but they are only available in 2500s and unfortunately I can't afford a 2500. Im at the bottom of the 150-1500 category im looking at the xl and base models lol. Even a brand new base is 45k im looking at a slightly used 2018-2020 less than 50k miles in the 30k range thats what I'm hoping to find iv found several f150 im the 36k range and a few dodges but all the chevys seem to have alot of miles on them I guess that's a good sign tho that means ppl like them and they keep them. Its a huge redflag to me to see a bunch of 2020 trucks with 20k miles or less on them. Like why would someone buy a new truck and trade it in less than a years time?

Some people trade every year. Beats me on why you would constantly want to lose money. IMO, I would try to wait until supply catches back up. You'll be lucky to buy a new truck right now, and even more lucky to buy one at a reasonable price.

Had a 2013 F150 with 3.5 ecoboost. Brakes were horrible and both front caliper had to be replaced by 10k miles. Had 66k on it in seven years when it blew a turbo and the cam timing stuff failed. $6500 and out of warranty. The motor moved the truck pretty well but mileage sucked and ride wasn’t great. My 2020 Ram with 5.7 Hemi exceeds the Ford in every way. Can’t recommend the 3.5 eco. I’ve heard the smaller ones are better. My brother has the small diesel and has good luck with it.

Yea thats kinda what I'm thinking im gonna wait ans see if this chip shortage ends it may flood the market with brand new vehicles. I saw a yt video where thousands of brand new f150s where parked waiting on a chip once those hit the market there will be a ton of year old brand new trucks hopefully on discount haha

Well a lot of bashing on them no surprise. I had a 2016 with a 3.5 it was a excellent truck. I have a 2020 I bought last year with the 2.7 I was hesitant at first, but that engine is built really
well. Plus mated too the 10 speed transmission it's a really nice package. It's probably got positives and negatives like every other Truck, but I'm happy with it.

We just picked up a 1964 f100 cutstom, 1500 bucks. We have a few old fords.
But to the question...
It's a ford, a new ford at that...of course it's a piece of ****.
Lol Go ask this on a ford forum if you want more positive feedback.

One of my coworkers has 2 late model F150's. One is his daily driver and tow vehicle for his travel trailer (32 ft I think), both bought new, and I believe they are both 3.5 engines. He has never had any problems with either one, his wife drives the 2018, his is a 2015, says the fuel economy is excellent, even when pulling the trailer. The 2015 has around 70k miles on it and zero problems, same with the 2018, but it has only around 30k miles.

FWIW I would not buy another hemi either, due to the cam/ lifter issues, or 6.0 GM, too hard on fuel, parents had one and had company trucks with the 6 liter. If you go with a GM I would stay with the 5.3. Plenty of power and decent fuel mileage. Just my
.02.

We have a 2014 F150 FX4 with the 5.0 and 165k miles. Been a wonderful truck for light towing and hauling and in 4wd it does excellent. Rides very nice compared to my dually and gets much better mileage, 16.8mpg average. Good truck.

never been a fan of the V6 in a truck, didnt want to deal with the turbos on my daily. wasnt sold on the Aluminum body either. looked at the Dodge & Toyota, ended up with the Toyota ( had a better resale ) really like the full rear glass rolling down ( no little slider window ) have 60K on it now without issue. Towed our A108 9-10hrs straight without issue ( other than towing a block killed the mileage ).

Get the 5.0 ! If it's an '18 make sure that the computer has been reflashed for the oil usage bulletin. The butterfly on the throttle body was closing so tight the engines would vacuum lock on quick deceleration and suck oil into the PCV and burn it. They thought they had cylinder issues until someone figured it out. I was actually waiting for a new engine when someone had a light bulb go off in their head.. No issues towing, other than fuel burn will go from the empty truck of 10.8l/100KM to 23l/100KM. Pulled this all the way to Bama and back to Ontario and you wouldn't know the trailer was even there!
