Music today sucks!

-
2 words…..BlackBerry Smoke. You like country? They play country! You like rock? They play rock. They are one of the best, well rounded bands in the business today, and their sound and musicianship is second to none.

The future of rock? Gotta appreciate the fact that they're actually playing the instruments! Look close at the solenoids on the guitar players left hand. I appreciate the technology involved.

To say today's music sucks, is your opinion, and your opinion only. I agree with you as much as I disagree. I will be 58 this year, so i have grown up with it all. My music playlist is all over the map. From classic rock to country to dance to hip hop to grunge to r&b to slow jams. Just depends on what kind of mood I'm in. When I think of music, I try to keep an open mind because your mind is like a parachute, if it ain't open it don't work. I agree, some of the music today is not for me, but there is also a lot of very talented musicians at the same time putting out some awesome music. .02

Cover tunes are paint by numbers, writing songs is art. Playing an instrument? well how many parents actually make their kids learn/ practice/ rehearse in the USA?

people always flock to young talent...where is it?

Again, I agree there IS good music being made these days IF you go looking for it, not on current public radio. I was referring to the overall commercial music industry, musicians being produced on image rather than talent. I'm sure we can agree, the industry as a whole is not generating the same kind of talent it once was. And yes, my interests vary from Sonny James to Judas Priest, Patsy Kline to Bob Dylan. About the only thing I don't care for is rap and screaming death metal, anything else is fair game. I'm 44 years old, grew up listening to my parents music then found interests of my own. In my opinion there was fantastic music from the 40's, up to last 10 years or so. One of the biggest transitions in music I recall growing up was the transition in early 90's from hard rock/metal to the grunge Seattle type sound, that was a big change, good music though. I feel I am very open minded when it comes to music, but I just can't take auto tune and image replacing ability and soul. Music at one time was raw and full of emotion, a large percentage of studio music is rubber stamp, and difficult to perform live because it isn't real.

Wouldn't it be nice to see another hard rocking woman like Pat Benatar, or the Heart sisters? How about a story teller like Dylan, Harry Chapin, or Gordon Lightfoot?

Many greats in music refused to cave to the desires and demands of producers because they knew they had something good. What would Queen have become if they had folded on Bohemiam Rhapsody?

This post was not meant as an argument, rather an observation of the music industry and how it has changed. The fact there have been so many responses to this thread proves music is something near and dear to the hearts of many of us. I can state with fact, when certain music comes on, my whole day brightens to another level!

Selling records was the name of the game, when people actually played records. Then it was Video, so it was listening and watching. Today its about "clicks" on the internet. the songs are forgettable, its a once and done deal, there is no money in it so why would a musician take time to write songs that are essentially disposable. You have no talent kids singing low information lyrics to a low information audience to unintelligent music. Will Justin Bieber songs still be listened to in 50 years like "All Right Now" by Free?

The new Iron Maiden record is going to be released September 3rd. I already preordered my copy. It will be awesome.
One of the greats I am referring to. I am fortunate to have seen Iron Maiden twice, excellent both times. Iron Maiden is another band still producing great music.

One of the greatest songwriters that's ever lived, IMO and I was proud to call him a personal friend. You'll not find any better music, IMO than what he was associated with.

There again, great music! Very cool that you were friends!

Here is a good one to get the mood right! IMO Mick Taylor brought the Stones to the next level!

Yes it is someone else already did the hard part...
Learning to ay someone else's song is fairly easy today, with the sheet music and tabs floating around the internet .it was more work in the old days learning by ear to the tape or record but even then, the hard part of composing, arrannging, arranging, writing lyrics was done...

Great post, and I agree with most, except the argument part. I'm assuming that was directed at me, since you quoted me. My post wasn't to argue or start an argument. My post is only my opinion on the subject. Like I said keep an open mind because your mind is like a parachute if it ain't open it don't work. If people would look at it like that, they just might find some of today's music to actually be very good. Again . 02

No, nothing directed at you on the argument part, I meant my post title "today's music sucks" was not meant to start an argument, was perhaps a harsh title.... I wish not to argue with anyone as everyone's point is valid. I can see how a title like that might invoke a reaction from others, that was not the intent. The title was intended more as a statement of frustration at the current music scene.

I really like your concept of the mind being like a parachute, it only works when it is opened. I think I may adopt that statement as it can be applied to anything in life.

Gonna disagree slightly. Doing a cover is less artistic for sure, but adding a new presentation can be art IMO.

My .02...
Nothing digital can be art, art is analog by definition. If music isn't analog, then it is just sound. I can only listen to music, but others can enjoy hearing sound. To each their own. Sound is disposable, art must be preserved.

A good example is computer-generated fractals, etc. Looks cool, but is not art and is disposable. Art requires a random act by a human, an idea or urge so to speak. Digital is incapable of ideas/randomizing/chaos.

I just learned of the passing of Charlie Watts after posting this video. This marks the end of an Era. Rest in Peace Charlie, you will be missed.

Just seen All That Remains last night kicked ***! Still great music it's just underground not that force fed radio trash.
How far down the metal path do you go? Slip Knot, As I lay Dying, Burn the Priest, Hatebreed, Lamb of God?

Maybe today's music doesn't suck ........................................................it BLOWS!!!!!!!!!!!!

...and there is a fair sized void without Motown.
I don't think the voices in modern music are what they used to be

I'm an avid collector of vinyl........couple hundred albums and 45s and vintage Technics stereo equipment.
Classic rock is most all what I listen to.
Being a kid from the 60s, every song is a time machine to me......still have regrets, being stationed just 3 hours away, not attending Woodstock.

Did I hear technics?
Here's part of what my $6000 got me;
not shown is the $1100 tape deck, the matching 1000 dollar Turntable and very expensive Sony XL55 cartridge., along with
a Second amp; they were only rated 90 watts in stereo...... but 200 in mono, so I had to have dual monos, lol.
Later I added a 5.1 surround sound unit with the fancy Dolby decoder. And and a center channel amp. And another stereo amp with another pair of bookshelf rear channel speakers. And a self-powered sub.
That's where I called it quits. That set is
about 43 years old, and still sounded great when I pulled the plug.
