Gonna disagree slightly. Doing a cover is less artistic for sure, but adding a new presentation can be art IMO.

Nothing digital can be art, art is analog by definition. If music isn't analog, then it is just sound. I can only listen to music, but others can enjoy hearing sound. To each their own. Sound is disposable, art must be preserved.
A good example is computer-generated fractals, etc. Looks cool, but is not art and is disposable. Art requires a random act by a human, an idea or urge so to speak. Digital is incapable of ideas/randomizing/chaos.
