Spinning up that original 3 spd manual transmission faster now too with the deeper gears. Could be part of the gear noise too.

Time for the Lucas in both transmission and rear end, 25% to 50% if you really want to quiet it down, being everything has been run in now.

Well, I took the 225 apart that @RAT ROD AL and his lovely wife, Theresa brought me a couple of days ago. It's ugly, but I can save it. It was slam rusted up in all six. #6 is busted big time, but as long as there are no cracks anywhere else, I'll sleeve the one let um bore it .030 and throw it in the corner. Ar any rate, here's what it took to get it apart. We've seen people throw around "pressing pistons" out of a block here and there, but how many times have you seen it done? I've done it maybe three or four times now counting this time. Here I am demonstrating "how to save some junk"....hopefully. LOL

Sorry Rob, about it being busted. I wouldn't spend a dime on it at the machine shop. Save some pieces off it and send that thing to China ! Plenty of good ones still floating around. Maybe the trans is still good.

Naw man it's all good. I'm havin a good time with it! I'm gonna inspect it real close and if that one cylinder is all that's busted, it's gettin a sleeve! I don't throw anything away I can use if I can save it. It looks good otherwise.
 
I got my bad boy Snap On air chisel out, cut the connecting rod out of #6 piston, cut half the non thrust side of the piston off so it would clear the main boss and knocked the piston right out the bottom, so I got it out! lol I swear, I think these Snap On air chisels will move the Earth. LOL So I have a bare block now. We'll see what the machine shop says.

Aight den, since you pitched such a fit....LOL.....I pulled a quart of gear oil out and replaced it with a quart of the Lucas. Got purdy hot here today so we probably ain't gonna drive her today. We'll drive her this week for sure. Man that stuff is THICK. I bet it's every bit of 140 weight. LOL It has one quart of Lucas and a half quart of 90 weight. That's all the little rear end holds is 1 1/2 quarts. LOL

I'm not touchin the transmission. It's quiet as can be with Dexron. The noise is no question all comin outta the rear. There's no doubt about it. I'm curious too. I knew it had quieting the gears on the label but have read all kinda good reviews about it. I'm sure it's not just the heavy weight too, but also the chemical makeup. I think it'll make a difference.

Yeah Your 3spd gear box is good with the Dextron. Got to thinking if you add the Lucas to that it may shift slower cause it's so thick. Ain't broke don't fix it, lol . .

We took Vixen to Gray today. Bout ten miles one way, I reckon. No change on the way in but on the way home, there's no doubt it's gettin quieter. I'm bettin it'll probably slack off even more as we drive it.

That's great, Conditioning the gears with the additives in the lucas.

Rob, any change in the gear noise now that you have driven it more? I have a very minor gear noise and I was considering trying the lucas additive. Mine is an 8 3/4 open diff.

Check your passenger side rear axle adjustable end play, that should be .012 ths.

If it is way more than .012 ths you may have more problems coming your way. First thing that wears out is the center cross pin in the diff carrier when it starts to go on the open diffs.

On a good note, adjust the end play on the adjustable passenger side axle back to factory specs. That may help to tighten things up a bit and reduce the noise.

Lots of times the main carrier bearings start to get wore enough to let the ring gear to start moving away from the pinion gear a few thousands, changing the wear pattern and creating a gear whine.

New bearings will help bring it back into spec, along with readjusting the ring gear backlash (side to side end play).
 
I replaced one rear wheel bearing recently and adjusted the end play so that shouldn't be an issue. I just have a minor gear noise under power, none on coast. If the car wasn't so quiet, or I had a radio, I would probably never hear it.

Lucas oil treatment is a great product.

Real similar situation with mine, but it's on decel slowing to a stop. Sometimes if Kitty and I are talkin we don't even notice it. Gettin ready to take Vixen to Gray to the grocery store now!

So if is the case, you have to pull the chunk to do it, but.

You can adjust in the the drivers side carrier bearing one notch to bring the ring gear back into spec with the pinion to make up for the wear in the carrier bearings.

Want to do it in a manner the properly sets the gear lash as you know though.

No parts to buy, just adjusts it back up.
Clean out the banjo housing and put in fresh gear lube with some lucas and you will be mint again.

Can't think of everything all at once.

If you pull your drive shaft. Then grab the pinion yoke by hand and rock it back and forth to feel the ring gear to pinion gear lash, should be around. 012 ths if this feels excessive there, then there is a good chance the carrier bearings are wore enough to send it out of spec and make it whine.

This happened to my 2000 Ford E150 van, put in new carrier bearings, and it broght the ring gear back into spec again and my gear whine went away.

This has factory green bearings. No adjustment.
 
Got the long rod short block assembled since I got the deck milled for MIGHTY dang close to zero deck. I'm tired. I'll measure it tomorrow, but it's REAL close. Should work real good with the closed chamber head. Compression will be "around" 9.5 with the little dished pistons.

Well, I finally had enough of this dingle dangied oil leak and pulled Vixen in the shop and am proceedin to pull her engine and transmission again to fix the oil pan leak and inspect the bearings. It's "probably" gonna get new bearings if they show any signs whatsoever of wear. We'll see. Pitchers forthcomin.
