I ask because i think the factory changed to roller in 85
Thanks

can look into valley for a bolt in spider roller lifter retainer. Also notice flats on roller lifters.

Pull the distributor out and look in or use a camera to see the spider or lifters

Engine is in truck and i don't want to pull it apart

I think you're right
"I don't want to pull it apart"

Then what DO you want? Some middle eastern swami to come put his hand on the valve cover and magically tell you? Six bolts and a valve cover's off man. Six lousy bolts. You might not even tear the valve cover gasket.

It’s the valve cover expense. Very pricey item …

Chances are no.
Roller provisioned block? Yes.
It will have the bolt holes for the spider that holds the dog bones/lifters.
'84 n up have been roller blocks ime.
87 or 89 actually used a roller CAM for sure.

A bit premature aren't you? I sure hope you're not afflicted in other areas by it

I beg your pardon, but you're the one who came here for help and then said you don't want to take anything apart? Whose premature here? Five minutes to get a cover off and you'll know. That's all it takes.

And then he gets all of 13 years old on you with “ premature“ jokes. What’s dick he is!

Premature that's right. You posted all of 10 minutes after DWBs post. Way before i had a chance to see his informative post

87 or 89 was roller for sure.

I'm building an 87 318 for another member right now and it's a roller cam block.... So they were roller by 87 for sure...

There's also a small hole on one side of the lifter... That is supposed to help burp any air out of them when they fill with oil, so the hole should face upward when you install the roller lifters....

Simply trying to get you to understand that it's not a difficult task. A lot of people are intimidated. It's nothing to be afraid of. That was my only point. But it's all good. I won't bother you anymore.

I have a 1984 318 roller block, .020 over, steel crank, 340 cam, 234 closed heads with a performer on top. I also just got an '85 roller motor, verified, as a core from the ram charger I built a teen for.
Both flat tappets from the factory, but still roller provisioned blocks.
Right now there is a 87 d250 in the yard with...a roller block. Short blocks cost around 200 here.
