Just finished removing all paint (and small amount of body filler) from my 72 dart. Used 80 grit paper on a da sander. Should i sand with 120,or 220 paper before i put on epoxy primer?

I used my DA and 60 grit, wiped it down with the cleaner and shot the epoxy primer. The next day it got the high build primer and two weeks cure time before sanding.

I would recommend resending all the bare metal with 220 as epoxy and high build won’t fill those 80 grit scratches. I attached some pictures of the hood of my 72 Duster and the steps after stripping it with the 60 grit paint removal drum on Eastwood’s SCT drum sander. I used the 220 drum to condition the metal prior to epoxy.

I have never had a problem with epoxy and high build covering 60 grit scratches on bare metal.

I always take the extra step to do what I call “conditioning” the metal with a quick 220 with my SCT just to be sure that after shrink that nothing will show. It’s just a little insurance if you have the time and tools it literally takes another 30 minutes. For the cost of the SCT I think anyone who is doing their own restorations should own one.

You need the 80 grit for the epoxy to get into the swirl pattern for maximum adhesion. I would not use anything finer

I’m sure that 80 grit on a DA leaves the metal in better shape than the SCT drum. I have never had an adhesion problem whatsoever. I always put the car or panel in high build within the 72 hour chemical window for the epoxy as opposed to letting it sit for an extended period of time then scuffing and respraying the epoxy then high build. I do let my high build set after I finish blocking for a few weeks. I’m in michigan so depending on time of year will change how long of a cure time before sealing and painting.

Tech sheets will always give the details for everything.
60 grit on a DA should leave of scratches that will be a problem for epoxy primer. Anything coarser will probably leave deep scratches.

OK got the epoxy part answered. Are you supposed to put high build on within 72 hours??. As you can tell i am NEW at this priming thing.

Yes most of the epoxy I have sprayed has a 72 hour chemical window for your high build to bond to. If you wait longer than that you’ll gave to scuff it with scotch then respray your epoxy to apply your high build within the window.

It all depends on whether you plan to do body work after you spray your epoxy. If you have the entire car down to bare metal then you’ll need to get it into epoxy as soon as possible then you can do your body work over the epoxy but you’ll just need to scuff it and respray the epoxy once all of your body work is done then you can spray the high build. I like the Mar-Hyde 2k high build personally.

Do exactly as the tech sheet says for your primer.

You could be getting information from a master painter who wins SEMA awards but if his line of paint requires different prep than yours, then his information is going to be invalid.
