I knew I would be dangerous with money in my pocket. I called and talked to a guy about his ad for a head and seat machine. He was going to try to call me over the weekend but couldn’t till this afternoon. At 5:15 tonight I took off for a 90 mile road trip to see it. (180 round trip). It’s more expensive than stuff I’ve been looking at but appears to be super clean and lots of tooling comes with it. I paid 3500.00 for the head and seat machine, a full size head pressure tool, and a portable head pressure tester with all plates included. The 3500.00 price includes delivery on probably Friday to my house. He also had a full size mill for 1500.00 but I’m going to sleep on that. The table showed some bad signs of wear.

Now you done it. You have a severe addiction. lol
Have you gone fishing in the boat yet ?

Yes Nice set up. Spend the next day cleaning everything and practice on some heads.

That is really cool !I would really enjoy that dude !! I learned as a young boy how to grind valves and seats ! My dad had his on business back in the 70's and 80's !! They did cylinder head work and automatic transmission !! A very odd combo i know lol !! I still build transmission's today ! Haven't did any cylinder head work in along time though !

Nice! You really also need a stone seat grinder setup, those machines do I nice job cutting multiple angles, but I allways touch the seat angle with a stone once I'm done, if you check the seat for runout after cutting with the multi angle cutters, you will see what I mean.

Nice congrats! I got a few sets you can practice on! Lol you gonna do work for hire to get some money back or personal use only?

Nice, no more grinding seats with a rock! Does it include or can you use Serdi type carbide inserts?

It came with some cutters and I brought a few boxes home last night to save him from hauling them here. I am going to look into the Goodson 3D cutter system. My buddy loves his.

Here's a Serd insert for those that may not know..

I was reading up on that issue last night. Hopefully I don’t have to ever use stones again as I would have to buy a newer setup. My Neyway cutters should be caliber of touching up the 45 seat.

Hopefully personal use only. I really burnt myself out last year with this last engine with the offset pushrods. Everything I did on that engine fought me. I probably have 4-5 sets of Edelbrock type heads I would like to finish and sell off. Way to many heads sitting here.

John, ur not showing any signs of slowing down. Lol. Kim

Truth is I gotta work on myself over the winter mentally and physically. My son not wanting to work in the shop anymore really hit me. We would argue like most fathers and son do but honestly I enjoyed working with him. His duster has now been totally torn apart rearend to engine for going on 4 years now. I don’t fear coronavirus but I do try to use my head. I would love to comfortably in my head start going to Planet Fitness over the winter but I doubt if that is going to happen with numbers going up again.

I hear ya there John as we age we have to start taking better care of ourselves. A while back I seen the doctor and he asked about exercise. I said I think about it. He said that’s what most ppl do, just think about it, they don’t actually do it. I have actually be pretty decent about it for the last 10 years or so. But I did slack off from in my 20s to the start of my 50s. Kim

I forgot you had the neway setup, that would work also. The machine like you bought is designed for productivity, and as backwards as it seems, it's not as accurate as far as holding runout compared to a stone. If you have steel pilots, forget trying to cut multiple angles at once, there is simply too much deflection. You would need carbide pilots at a minimum in my opinion. Also when you set the machine up, having it dead nuts level is a MUST, and you need a level that attaches to your pilots to level the guide with the spindle.

Thanks for the help. I brought the level home last night and he unwrapped it to show it to me.
