What cudamark said and sometimes the header needs unbolted and the motor jacked over to get it out. This was the procedure on my 66 Coronet to get the starter out with a 440 and headers.

Ya I had to jack up the motor 1/2"-3/4" to get the starter in kept hanging up on the steering linkage
