Thinner the better. The fiberglass reinforced filler also has advantages other than strength, it tends to be somewhat waterproof. Filler tends to want to absorb moisture, why so important to seal it.
Mentioned above was fiberglass. The approved method is always repair with metal, but I admit I have had some long lasting luck with it.
