Good Evening All,
I have a question about the Classic Industries part (MA18011A) in the title. I have never noticed until now that the description states:
"Will fit 1970-76 A-Body models with original square speedometer (some early models came with a rectangular speedometer and this panel is too narrow and will not fit)."

I have a 1971 Dodge Demon that originally included the gauge panel attached. Is this considered the square speedometer or the rectangular speedometer? I am unfamiliar with any other speedometer than this for the Demons, and technically this is a a rectangle. So will the Classic Industries 6-Gauge unit fit my '71 Demon?

Thanks In Advance,
Jacoby S. Berry

Only guessing here as your right both are rectangular. I thinking they are calling yours square. Call them and see if you can send them a picture so you are both on the same page.

By definition they were all rectangles. Square would be equal lengths on all 4. Their ad should probably say 72-76. 70-71 dash was different.

Good Evening ALL,
so I just got off the phone with Classic Industries, and I was told that my original speedometer that I posted is indeed considered the RECTANGULAR speedometer. Apparently there was a "limited production" of actual SQUARE speedometers for Late '70 to Early '71 A-Bodies, and Chrysler made a transition to what is the more common and dominant rectangular speedometer configuration (what we typically see above) for Non-Rallye cars. I asked if there was a picture available for the SQUARE speedometer as I have never seen one, and of course the representative was not able to provide one. So essentially what Classic Industries offres only fits a limited number of cars with a configuration that I have never seen. I'm sure it's possible to mod it to fit, but I'm just not sure what amount of labor would even be required.

Unless someone is able to post a picture of the actual SQUARE speedometer for reference and help for other forum members, I'd consider this thread a candidate for closure by the moderators. Thanks for the input from everyone as well.

Regards,
Jacoby S. Berry

I have a 70 Duster. I’ll have to check but I think it’s the same as all of them. I’ve never seen one.

Thanks...and I am with you. My Dad has Dusters, Demons, Twisters, and Darts from '70-'74 and the only two configurations I've ever seen are what I have posted and the Rallye. I'm stumped...

I think you must have confused him. The picture you showed above matches the image they show on their website -

The only other dash and IP I know of is the Rallye dash that came in the 340 cars and all A-Body Barracuda.

It had a much longer IP opening that the one above:

If you posted your actual IP, then the Classic Industries insert will fit the opening.

I agree with you in that via limited visual analysis and comparison, the Classic Industries assembly should fit as it appears that the mounting holes and steering column notch details are all the same. But then again, the Classic Industries representative provided very distinct dialogue stating that there were in fact three (3) different configurations, and that what they offer is a replacement for item (a) below only:
(a) A Limited Production Late '70 to Early '71 SQUARE Speedometer
(b) The Common RECTANGULAR Speedometer (which is what I have (in original post) and what was the replacement for the SQUARE)
(c) The Rallye

I will bring this up to my restoration guy during our next sit down, and if I decide to give a shot anyway I will definitely let the forum community know what the outcome is.

Many Thanks!

By "rectangular" are they talking about the earlier "long skinny" Dart type speedo?

The description could have stated "does not fit where there is a foot long sweeping speedometer". No yours isn't exactly square but close enough to be identified as square.

I have that IP installed in my Duster, everything fit perfectly. My factory dash was the same as yours.

I bought the panel from Autometer. I got it on ebay from a bout $220, and then put my own gauges in it. I wish they were a little fancier looking though.

I'm pretty sure my original IP is the same as yours. But as an FYI, that panel can be found for $215-250ish and standard sized gauges fit in case you wanted a different style than what they offered as a package. Painless Wiring sells a gauge wiring kit, but I'm not sure if the layout fits that panel, I built my own. Also, I noticed in the notes, that is an electronic speedometer, not a mechanical one, so you'd have to buy the adapter for your trans to make it electrical which is another $100

SPEED SENSOR, MECH TO ELEC, GM & CHRYSLER, 7/8

might be a dumb question but doesnt look too far off from fitting in a 69 valiant dash... anyone know if it does?
