Disappointed in my 383 on the Dyno

How does anyone know what camshaft he has? He doesn't even know what camshaft he has.

I know a guy who bought the edelbrgock top end kit for his 383 RR.Can't remember the specs but the cam had a lot of duration.It sounded nasty and would scare women and small pets but wouldn't break one tire loose from a roll and was lazy at lo speeds but made good power at hi RPM.

At some point the OP said it's got a hyrdaulic roller cam (Post 19). I doubt the OP knows what cam it actually has. It's just a bunch of speculation at this point.
 
I thought if it was alumn it was an OD but i am not sure. What i can tell you on the highway going 60 mph my rpm's are around 2k
If you're looking at the shifter ears on the outside of the transmission and the one all the way towards the front is pointed upwards as opposed to the other two it's likely it's an overdrive... And two grand at 60 MPH with 391 gears and a reasonably sized tire like 28 in or so it's likely an overdrive...
 
1st gear should be a 309 ratio and get out of the hole nice and quick but second gear probably lasts forever...
 
I do agree. The numbers aren’t bad. And a cam change itself isn’t going to get u to 400 at the wheels. Could get u closer though. I thought cam was hydraulic rpm. Guess I read wrong.

I was told it is a hydraulic roller cam from edlebrock to go with the top end performer rpm kit. The shop i had it at yesterday that did the dyno tuning said its a very mild cam. I know it would be better if i knew the specs of the cam but without tearing it apart, giving you guys what i know is all i can do.
 
As far as I can tell, Edelbrock only sells one HR cam for a BB Mopar...... and it’s not a “small” cam........Especially for a 383.

I would think the 440 would be pretty much in the same configuration as a 383 but I'm not positive on that...
I'm not a big fan of an aluminum case on a 4-speed with the kind of horsepower and torque your talking about..


They made aluminum cases and tail shaft housings for drag racing. It doesn’t have to be an OD transmission.
 
Also, heads were installed from the box along with cam, and intake.

this could be part of your problem. These days you have to check the heads for problems, that means take them apart. I've seen many aftermarket heads at my buddies shop that were new and they had problem like seat run out, tight guides etc. He checks all new cylinder heads before installing them

ok, so I actually reached out to the kid of the guy who owned the car prior to me and he stated it wasn’t a edlebrock cam after all and he’s almost positive it’s the cam below as that’s the box that was I the garage. See below

Can you run a compression test and tell us what the cranking rpm cylinder pressures are. This will give us a good idea of the engines potential.

Nice street cam but that is not going to give you the panty dropping power you are after.
 
What made you decide you need 400 plus hp at the rear wheels? Really, i think 330 at the rear wheels should be a tire fryer! Get a cam designed for the street with high lift and short duration and you'll have a ball...unless it's a quarter mile car. What are your gears and tire size?

want to be able to take to the track once I relocate the springs in the rear and get some wider tires. It’s got 3.91 gears
 
Nick's garage dynoed a 383 & it only just busted 320 hp with a purple cam in it. This was on his engine dyno, not chassis dyno....
 
OK, so that 383 made 320 crank hp. Which purple cam... they range from .434 hyd to .690 mushroom solid... what are the rest of the engine specs? Heads?
 
I'm still trying to wrap my head around the statement that ''I can't find a 440 block for less than a grand''.
A whole running engine out of a New Yorker maybe, but just the block?
Look around, you should be able to find a standard bore block and caps that need machining for around 400 bucks or so.........
 
Aside from adding some giggle gas, best bang for my buck way to achieve 400-450 to the wheels?

The way I see it........ swap to a rowdier camshaft....... then basically......iiwii.
That might not actually improve the 1/4 mile times with a 4 speed and 3.91’s, but it would def get things closer to the point of getting passengers worked up.

Anything other than that, that will really make a “noticeable” difference in power....... won’t be very budget friendly.
