Six years ago I started a new job after staying at home for a year following taking an early retirement.
I didn't like staying home and figured the new job would help finance my '69 Dart build.
I found something I wanted to do and was hired immediately following my initial interview. I'd previously spent over 25 years in management but didn't want to deal with the hassles of management any more.
Today (Friday), the COO is on vacation so our manager said we can knock off work today 2.5 hours early. I heard him tell someone else he's heading to Las Vegas after work.
There's only 3 of us in the office today so, being 'old school' I decided not to take my lunch break today and work straight through to the early quitting time.
The other guy in the office ended up leaving 1.5 hours before the early quitting time...taking his lunch break plus an additional 30 minutes and nothing was said.
If I was still 'management' he wouldn't have done that and we would be here for the full day.
I know it was my choice to work through my lunch time, but it's difficult watching others not give a full days work for a full days pay and then also taking extra time.
Rant over.
Thanks for listening.

...........Which is why time clocks were invented...........

I've only worked one job actually punching a clock. Two jobs we kept track of our own time both for total hours and for job billing purposes

The irony is, that the job I just was layed off, the wheelchair joint, was the most "skinflint" of all, and THAT had a time clock

I have not punched a clock in ten years.
I'm old school also.
I'm not domesticated.
Not sure I could do it again ?
Being self employed has advantages !
I spent 8 years in management many years ago.
The adventures of babysitting!
Just remember the cool stuff you are getting for your dart !

My dad and I were talking today about people working today... There will always the "get by guys", the "shaker and movers", and the underachievers. I suspect it's been that way all along...

I would rather do my thing and just not be a part of anything other than a shaker and a mover. Makes the day go by. The others tend to struggle through life financially or just live out there life as a drone. It is what it is.....

9 outta my 12 hours a day are spent in front of SCADA running our water plant.
Everyone else figures theirs should involve 75% seat time also. Lazyass jack wagons, BUT mgmt let's them. Taxpayers $$.....the old saying "hide n go seek, 40 hours a week"

There are actually places where people actually work.
The only people I see that actually work are sole proprietors.
I'm very old school and from what I've witnessed from the disrespectful young workers today I'd have a hard time making it through a day without sticking my foot up somebodies ***.

That's why I don't manage people. We go to work so a job can get done and we get paid. It's not complicated.... I am unfiltered daily anyways and it doesn't work well with managing people. Machines are so much easier to interact with versus fellow employees.....

We just finished installing a machine today that eliminates labor. Oh well, automation is fixing the american worker (atleast in manufacturing) slowly but surely...

when i was working outside, i loved it when the foreman would give us the option to work though lunch and head in early. didn't get to go home early, just got back to the yard sooner. seems like a lot of people just want to see what extras they can get out of their employer, like they're owed more than their pay.

at my work, nothing good comes from SCADA, it's always bad news

Lol our "maintenance crew" convinced mgmt to let them work 4 10's instead of 5 8's thru the summer. They also now get paid for their lunch. And the extra 2 hours of "work" each day is spent doing nothing.
It really is an fn joke.

Integrity is what a man does when no one is looking, I would caution anyone to looking at anyone else you most likely will be disappointed. I just was awarded a lateral move to get away from my old position today dealing with homeless in the largest homeless crap show in United States. A liberal nightmare so to speak. I am in a position of leadership and many of my peers were very flattering with their comments being I'm moving out of the department. It just feels good to do the right thing no matter what.

As odd as it may seem im glad you posted this im sorry you had a bad day at the office but I needed to read this. Im in a similar situation at work and have been hesitant to post anything I don't wanna seem ungrateful or whiney but desperately need to vent lol

trying to get this to the kids...It's tough watching others take advantage but never mind everyone else.
You just have to look in the mirror each night and be happy with the guy in the mirror.
Have i always been perfect...not a chance but i'm old school and there was always a level i wouldn't go below and took "heat" for it at times.

I have "old school" work ethics. There are always those that work hard and those that hardly work. For the past 19 years I've seen more of the latter at my work.

That all changed Monday as my boss had to shutdown the business. I'm sure, due to my work ethic, he asked me to stay on to help close down the business. I don't really care what I have to do. I just know it has to get done. At the end of the year I'll be laid off for the first time in my life.

I'm old school as well. 8 for 8 or out the gate is my mantra. Done it all, owned my own business and been upper level management for the last 20 years. Now at the peak of my professional life I only work the projects that I want to part time. I can't ***** about the next groups coming up because they are beneath my notice. I'll admit not liking tats and piercings on the puppies but that is our world now. I'm looking forward to my complete exit from the workforce in about a year or less. Gramps needs car parts!!

The OP stated his CO is on vacation and so the "manager" said everyone can leave 2 1/2 hours early....
Right off the top of my 44 year union employed head, id have to say your manager sounds untrustworthy.
I believe the OP did the right thing and one that he's comfortable with.

I spend nearly a decade in production, running brake presses and such

One thing that drove me crazy was the "rate guys"
They would ask what the rate was for a machine (how many pieces it should produce per hour) them times that by 8 and get that number punched out shortly after lunch...only to spend the rest of the day doing nothing

A few times when that happened I went over and ran that machine for a few days straight...after which they always bumped the daily rate up

Must not have been a union shop.

Must not have been a union shop.
No sir...I don't think I could ever work for a union shop

I understand they had their place in history, but I don't think they have done our country any good in at least half a century

If you work for yourself and love what you do, you tend to work all day, 7 days a week... unless giving one day or at least part of it to God Almighty makes you feel more complete.

I have to totally disagree and hopefully this won't head down to rabbit hole, I have a union position we have the highest pay rate the best equipment, the best benefits package, the most time off, and probably the highest quality of worker in our industry. Maybe a few people take some advantage but when there's a thousand people that want your job you better do it good. And once again I try not to measure myself by other people's standards or what they do with their time.

New school, old school.... lazy mthrfkrs inhabit both. Remember this right after we the taxpayers bailed these sh#tbags out?
Chrysler workers exposed smoking pot, drinking on lunch breaks return to jobs.

I'd like to have a those things!

My only union experience was short lived. I was targeted by the HR gal, she was a piece of work. But she'd pick someone and find a way, any way, to fire them. The union guy on my side of the shop was in her hip pocket, so I had no help there. I didn't do anything wrong, but I still got the axe. Even the union rep was a complete moron.

The company later relocated from Minnesota to Kansas, where they hired people for $8/hr vs two or three times they paid here.

Now I'm working for a company that has no problem paying hard workers crap pay, they don't even give reviews, you just complain and they give you a raise. :realcrazy: But I have a strong work ethic, so I do my job to the fullest and go home when I can't do anymore that day.

99.9% of the time, I'm the last one to leave after my shift is over.
But in all fairness, there are also a few young people I work with that have a strong work ethic too.
Too bad it's the exception not the rule.
I'm 59 now and that's the way it's been all of my working life, I think it's more of a parenting problem than anything.

Agreed, I have had the privilege of training some young people that had great worth ethics and really strive to be successful and I know they will. A lot of it is about positioning yourself always looking for new opportunities and not letting your emotion get the best of you. Trust me there are times I wanted to literally throw my boss through the plate glass window we were standing by but I knew I had family and responsibilities to meet and by grinding it out the cream usually rises to the top and the chaff blows away. I didn't imagine I would be in the position I am in now fairly comfortable moving into retirement not rich by any matter of means but the bills will all be paid and the Wolf well if it comes to my door I'll just shoot him in the head LOL. I always do my best to take the high road! And not get drug down by others stupidity or greed.

Its the easy way to blame the union worker when the blame should be were it rightfully belongs
People seem to think being in a union automatically give a worker the God given right to be a slacker.
Its been my experience that shops ran like that are shops were the management has lost a gripe and lets the worker dominate
I would not know my trade like I know today nor would I have what I have had it not been for my union trade employment......I wouldn't have the benefits or retirement I have either
I also seen at my age many of guys I know who are dead or disabled from all sorts of disease and other illness as a result of the work that they did all those years
So no a union job isn't a cushy easy get any with anything type of employment, not with what I did
We had major F-ups, guys who were drug users thieves who deserved any punishment they got including getting fired and we had guys who did nothing wrong and still got screwed over, I represented them all as a shop steward....I worked for good and bad boss's ....Its human nature not the job or union
