Hey guys .
I suspect my mechanical fuel pump is a little loud
(68 383) I'm thinking of replacing it .
I thought I read somewhere you could temporarily bypass it by pinching off the fuel line..
Or am I dreaming that?
Thanks

Never heard of that before. You should remove the pump and check the rod that actuates the fuel pump. It rides on a lobe on the camshaft. 65'

By pass for what reason? I unhook the rubber feed line from the rear and stuff a bolt in it to plug it while I am horsing with the pump. The line to the carb is going to empty it self regardless so get a drain pan under the pump to catch the fuel.

Bypass to temporarily render the pump from working.
I must have been thinking something else..

Thinking of it now I wonder if I pulled the pump and pushrod.. and start car, it should stay running for 10 seconds or so to see if I hear difference in noise before replacing pump.

Unless you also have a electric pump, the engine won't run if the mechanical pump is bypassed.

the mechanical action will still be there line or no line...yes u could pull the pump and rod and see if the noise is gone...

When you pull the pump, grab the arm and try to move it up and down and side to side. There should be little to no movement. Lots of movement indicates it is worn out and must be replaced.

Sorry, I am a little slow this morning. You were going to pinch off the line to disable the pump to diagnose the noise. Might work and it might not. The pump is still operating whether gas is flowing ot not but if it's pumping and working harder it may be more noisy. Go th the parts store and buy a stethoscope to diagnose the noise.

I bought a stethoscope last night ironically and when listening to pump it seams fairly noisy.. not sure what noise is acceptable..
Probably just replace pump..
Don't hurt to have a spare..
Thanks

Doubt if the pumping chamber is causing noise that could be heard above the noise of a running engine.
More likely to be pump arm, moving parts.

Does anyone know the length of the pump push rod?
68 383
Thanks

Did you find the noise?? I suspect my FP is making noise too. It is a Holley fuel pump. Is it a pumping noise you heard or a mechanical tap or something?

No I have not. I ordered a new pump and have to pick it up..
Not sure if it's normal or something going on.. maybe ill take a video later today and try to post it.
Thanks

I'm thinkin' mine might be from a plugged rear fuel filter. I just replaced it, can't start it yet, the tank is out. But I should have the tank replaced Tuesday, waiting on a sending unit lock ring. I'll post the results. It was making a noise like some weird pumping noise. Not a mechanical tap or grinding.
