Hello
I hae a 69 A Body Barracuda.
Its a small block with a 4 speed console shifter (The one that looks like its bent out of shape, lol) I need to know which shifter mechanism I have in my car. I want to buy another one but I see there are so many.
Can someone help me here please.
Thanks.

The 1969 "push in shifter" had 5363 stamped on the reverse arm.

I'm not looking for the shifter but that part(shifter mechanism?) The shifter goes into.
It's on the car I can't take a picture of it.
Thanks

While we are on the subject does a Hurst "Competition plus" mechanism bolt directly to an a body tail shaft?

I have a "Competition Plus" mechanism in my 69 Dart.
It uses the Hurst 2298 aluminum mounting plate between the mechanism and the
tail shaft mounting bosses.

The first pic is the factory original 1969 Hurst shifter parts except for the black ball.
The 2nd pic is the Hurst Competition Plus shifter 2298 mounting plate and rods installed.
Notice that the Hurst Competition Plus shifter mechanism sits more upright while the factory shifter leans forward.
This is due to the difference in the 2298 mounting plate when compared to the stock #195 0090 mounting plate.

Thanks. I have a competition plus as a spare that came with my 70 Swinger 340 as well as the stock equipped mechanism. is one better than the other in terms of reliability and function? also it looks like the rods are different...

Here is a picture of the two mounting plates side by side.
FYI the 2298 mounting plate was the factory mounting plate that was used on the 64-65 A-body 4 speeds.

Yes, all three rods are different. You can still used the stock levers that mount on the transmission.

Here is a picture of what I currently have installed in my Dart.
Hurst Competition Plus shifter mechanism with the stock "bolt in" 1971 and later Hurst shifter handle.

Both shifters are good and will do the job. The Comp Plus is a better shifter, it has stops ( two bolts) that stop the shift handle when you have completed your shift. The stock shifter mechanism is stopped when the synchroniser goes into gear as far as it will go. Under hard shifting, this shifter will eventuality start breaking blocker rings, the brass syncro ring. I broke them all the time back in day until I figured out why.

I went to my parts stash and, apparently what was in my stash is my factory original shifter ( without shift stops) , and my Comp plus is on the car (with the shift stops).
so, that factory shifter shown above is a drop in shift handle? is there any parts that go on the end of the hanlde? my handle fit s loose in the factory shifter but it bolts to the comp plus...

The factory handle is called a bayonet and has a thin piece of stainless/ shim in the shifter mechanism with a tang on it, that holds the handle in. The Comp Plus handle has two bolts that attaches it to the mechanism.

I think I have written this before I bought a screw (2 bolt) shifter from Brewers as I did not know that I had a bayonet type orinal (69) barracuda and they put it in without the bolts and is held in withn that shim and had no problems but I nbelieve my shifter mechanism now is not workingn well is itm possible the shifter is not in well because sometimes I have problems with 3rd, only 3 third and at higher rpms..

I do not have the two shifter mechanisms or shift handles in front of me, but am sure that the shift handles are not interchangeable.

70 and earlier "push-in" handle next to the 71 and later "bolt-in" handle.
The bolt in handle is the same one that in in my picture in post #13

SURPRISE, I BOUGHT THE ONE FROM BREWERS WITH THE 2 HOLES AND PLACED IN THE BAYONET MECAHNISM AND I HAVE NO PROBLEMS WITH IT. I even bought a piece that you can plug the 2c hole shifter that you can then put in the bayonet original mechanism but i never even used it.
In fact that just remined me of something else i must correct on monday but as for the shiter it works fine in the mechanism ..

P.S. What I would like to know what the longest shifter that can be used in the bayonet mechanism I have the console shifter in there now like I said that i had bought from brewers but would like to remove it as its not that comfortable when you are speed shifting, let alone not comfortable, Sure looks are nice, console is nice and they even sell a add on to use a regular straight shifter with a console,,,,originally made to use a pistol grip in the console of a 69 shifter..

If you use they bayonet style shifter, do yourself a favor and slobber anti seize compound all over the end of the shifter before you install it. That way, it will not seize up and can be easily removed later.

Well I'll have to have it removed, and done... Following advice..

i despise the slide in shift handle so much, on the OD 4 speed in the rat truck, I removed "all that crap" and drilled two matching holes matching the bolt in Hurst handles so I can just bolt them in.

I hear you there but where did you screw it in on the mechanism

Yeah my factory shifter, I think its missing parts, If I drop the handle in its loose would never lock in...
