Just curious what kind of charities members belong to or donate to.
The wife is a rotarian.
I collect scrap metal and a percentage went to a local community event. We recently had a falling out due to some clique commitee members.

So just curious what is possibly out there?

Folds of Honor is one I highly recommend

First and foremost our local church

Secondly some missionaries we know personally

Wanna talk about "conicendences" ? (That is Christian speak for "God at work")

There is one missionary we have known and supported for years, decades, really

He requested a meeting with us a few months ago when he was visiting the US

So we met with him and he mentioned that one of the companies that sponsored them was dropping them as well as 2 other families he works with
(the company cited covid and reduced income as a reason)

So he asked us to pray about the situation

Well, I had no problem helping him out, we have known him for years, in fact, he cooked me and my dad breakfast over a campfire on a mountain in Chile once, he's very near to our heart

But the other two families, I didn't know them from Adam, it was a little harder to commit to them

So a few days later, I'm sitting in church and in between songs, I'm praying
Now, this was a Sunday evening service, and my wife was on call, so I was thanking God for allowing her to be in the service l, and not getting called in to work and clear as day I heard God say to my heart "if I can provide for your wife to get paid to listen to my Word, but you don't think you can trust me to help you provide for my workers?"

And we're not talking thousands here, but the amount was enough for me to not know if we could afford it, but at that moment I decided we would take over their support for a year, and then see how things looked after that

So after the service we swung by where he was staying and we told him the news

Of course he was excited and wanted to share a little bit more about the families we were going to be supporting...it turned out I was mistaken when I said I didn't know them

One of them had had us over for breakfast one morning, not in the mountains but they had fresh bread the wife had baked outside in their oven and the other one turned to she was my wife's sundayschool teacher, some 3 decades ago

For the most part I donate where 100% of the money goes to help local folks in genuine need. If there is a percentage that goes to ‘admin expenses’, then no donation.

I was looking to donate for Lt Dan.He supposedly does alot for our hero's.I haven yet.I quit going to church and something tells me to give to that church. The pastor had some good sermons then started on other Christian churches and I rather hear the word and worry about other denominations

That's how I dealt with the missionaries I mentioned too

They have a board that backs them, and I don't mind them taking a cut, but if that cut gets above 5% in out
So, I send my support to a local church, they add to it and send it directly to the missionary

First is our church. Second is where we feel led, sometimes me and sometimes my wife.

What we use to do when I was still a fireman was we would pick out a needy family that we had responded to a call on during the year. We would get with the family, find out details like kids ages, clothes sizes, and ask just what the family needs. Than we would shop for then, wrap up presents and play Santa on Christmas or day before. We would also throw the family a big dinner. Well since I retired in 2011. I started what I call “The Old Farts Breakfast” and we meet 4 times a year. Well on the breakfast gathering in December I throw in 300-500 and ask for the group to find me a worthy family and ask others if they want to donate and we still do the same Christmas donation.

My first rule is I never give to any organized religion or political party. Way to much corruption in both.
Having said that, I give a great deal to a religious based organization that makes sure needy kids have Christmas/Hanukkah. They helped 64 families last years and over 130 kids. They don't end with the holiday's, they work with school nurses and there is a need anytime of the year, they cover it.
I give to the American Legion's Boys State program here in Ohio. They teach high school kids how our government actually works and it involves them in a lot of aspects of running a government.
I also give money and (a lot) time to a historical society. We have the responsibility of maintaining a presidential birthplace.
Of course U.C. alumni association and the University hit me up every year. I generally only donate to a particular scholarship that is for veterans only. I also buy 2 season tickets to UC Football at a higher price, to shut them up. Yes, I use them!
I also give to DV Farm, a veterans charity, but not as much as I should.
