Disappointed with my engine

I have a .040 over 360. Has **** J heads with 1.94 valves KB 190 pistons (small domes ). I have a Vertex mag, M1 intake and currently a 870 street advenger which is a vac secondary deal (carb needs further tuning). I have a Comp Cams Xe280r camshaft - I.570 242@ .050 and E .576 248 @ .050 installed straight up. Revs happily I've seen 7,000 on the tell tale. I have an 8" Turbo Action converter that flashes up toward 5000 and 4.33 gears. Car is very very light 1500lbs and it runs 6.3 on the 1/8 so that tells me it's only making 300 hp WTF ? I would think it should run well into.the 5's. What have I missed?
 
Makes sense now. 1.40 60’ is not very good. Thou it depends on the height tire. The SG car in my avatar weighed 2615 with out me in it 2890 with me would 60’ 1.20. Ran 5.80’s with a iron headed 440. 4.88 gear with 16x33 slicks.

I run the 60' light on my back wheels!
 
Engine is nothing more than an air pump. Maybe several things heads , carb size, timing? What RPM is it turning at the end of the 1/8?
 
If that is so. Then it may do better with more gear. But since your so light, 4.33 should be enough. How tall are the slicks?

33x10.5 Hoosier. It's was a disaster trying to get it off the line with 31's so I went to the taller tyre to stop it trying to chuck me out on to the deck on the green
 
I would be curious about the RPM's at the stripe.... Easiest thing to do is borrow a nice 850 DP from someone and give it a whirl..... The heads aren't helping and when you said **** (lol) one can only assume they are not far from stock. With that Converter it's gonna want some air pumping through the motor especially at 1500lbs.
I bet a set of TF's OOTB and you would be smiling assuming everything else is in place (ignition, headers, fuel....)

You answered your own question "**** J heads".
Dont know what your CR is but that cam is too big for those heads.
Are the heads and intake ported?

Just port matched and tidied up aroind the pushrods. I can't believe the stock heads will only support 300 hp? I raced Fords years ago and all we did was tidy up the roof of Clevo heads and good to go!

You can’t even compare 351 Cleveland heads with those small valve J heads.

Small valve heads, I wouldn't use a vacuum sec. carb on a dragster with a 500rpm flash converter. Just my take so far.

With a bit of love a vac secondary carb can be killer in one of these. AHh. now I see the R on the part number.
