Ive put in a few 4spd tranys before with help $ by my self. They all went in without any major problems. Saturday afternoon i decided to put my 4spd trany in my barracuda. I got it in the splines with out a hitch but thats all the further i could get it to go. The trany is about an 1/4 inch away from the bell housing & the bearing retainer bolts are just ready to go in. No matter what i did it wouldnt go any further. I had the trany in & out 3 times & all the same distance. So checked to make sure the bearing retainer would fit the bell housing & it will, tight but will fit. I also checked the bearing retainer bolts & the little washer that is molded to the head of the bolts just might be hanging it up. Not sure yet. Started to get dark & my lights battery is about dead. Never had any problems before. Yes i did get it in the splines. Anyone with ideas ?

Is your crank shaft drilled for a 4 speed? If not, get this and cut 1/4" off the tip of the shaft...

There are cranks that were drilled for the manual transmission pilot hole but not honed to size. It is possible to drive a pilot bushing into a non honed crank pilot bore, but being undersized that over compresses the bushing and it will not accept the transmission pilot shaft.
That got me one time.

Did not know that, interesting.

when i bought this engine (360) it already had a pilot bushing in it so i never gave it a thought that the trany wouldnt fit also the alignment tool i got with the clutch kit fit ill have to check it out thanks guys

Is the bell housing aligned with the crankshaft?

Not sure if this will help or not, but I fought the 4-speed on my truck multiple times until I got the angle just right between the trans and engine. I got some 4" bolts, cut the heads off and chamfered the remaining edges and slotted the tops with a hacksaw. Then we threaded them into the mounting holes so they served as guide rods. Once the trans was lined up with them I was able to wiggle and fiddle till it fully seated to the engine. Then I removed the guide bolts one at a time with a screwdriver and swapped in the regular mounting bolts.

When ever you install a different bell housing on a different motor the bell should be dial indicated to the crank. New or used they should be checked. Just had a friend destroy a new 18 spline from Passion because he didn't do this. It burnt the through out collar and the input blue from rubbing.

I already fought some like this I hooked the clutch linkage up and had someone push the clutch and it went right in.

The plastic alignment tools are not that great of a fit. I always use and old input shaft.

One thing I always do if I feel there may be an alignment problem is. After installed Leave the driveshaft off , Have someone put the car in 4th gear and hold the clutch pedal in . You should be able to install a yoke in the trans and turn it by putting a small bar in where the u-joints go. If you can't turn it you have binding.

Got it in today i remembered something my dad told me he had to do one time loosen the clutch bolts it went right in lol
