Gents,

I’m looking to modify the base of a 2 barrel air cleaner to use on my edelbrock 1406 4 barrel carb. I’m sure someone has done this. If you have any tips/tricks up your sleeve, or know of a thread for this modification, please let me know…

thanks

Buy the right part. Makes life easy, ehhh.

Honestly, why not just use a Magnum air cleaner? The Magnum throttle body is 4 bbl. sized, so it bolts right on your carb. It's set up for fresh air ducting. And it came on 3.9s, 5.2s and 5.9s in many different Dakotas, fullsize trucks and vans. And best of all, it sells for peanuts at the boneyards. And looks stock.

Not all have the Magnum sticker on them- so pick your flavor.

Or just Cut them both and make One outta the two. Helps if you can weld.
I made mine out of two old ones...

I’m going to machine an adapter. Pics to follow…

It doesn’t need to be so complicated. Measure the diameter of the ID of where the air filter sits in the 4-barrel base (in the picture you posted) and cut the existing 2-barrel air cleaner to that, lay the piece into the existing air cleaner, mark and drill holes then rivet it with shallow 1/8” rivets. Paint and done. Sealing with thin closed cell foam, a thin bead of sealant what have you. Piece of cake. Welding is overkill and unnecessary

I have done a few conversions just using pop rivets. Easy to do, not re-inventing the wheel.

Seal the outside edge with silicon to plug any small gaps.

$21 custom air cleaner is now finished.

$10 Craigslist find Air Cleaner
$11 Tube of Ultra Black
45 mins plasma cutting n welding Chrome 5-1/8” donor base piece in
15 mins 3 coats black paint

I had planned on doing the same thing, I even bought the 6" base to weld to the 2 barrel cleaner but ended up just buying a round one I like the look of it so ill leave it.
