Weld on sway bar tabs

-
for what it's worth, i used the classic ind style ones on a 74' with a stock front bar and they worked fine. bolted everything together to see where they wanted to locate on the arms and welded them up
Sure, that's because a 73-76 factory stock front sway bar and mount, is a whole lot different than the 67-72 that's being talked about in this post.

2004??
After 16 years, you've got to be kidding me.
LOL. I'm still kicking around and not the only one.

right, and there was some mention of just using these instead if he wasn't concerned with a factory look

yes, I know that this is an old thread.
Has anyone tried modifying the Hotchkis 23366 sway bar tabs (designed for a B-body) to fit a 68-72 A-body LCA? How did it work? I'm trying to solve this situation for the 70 Dart I'm building now...

Are you using a factory sway bar? Because if you're not, you won't use the stock 68-72 tab location anyway.

I'm using an Energy Suspension bar that puts the bar in the same location as an original bar. I have the exact same set up on my 70 Dart Custom

i think many aftermarket 67-72 sway bars have the same eyelet to eyelet dimension as stock.

I don't know the price on those tabs, but it's not a lot of money. If I were needing tabs I would buy the 66-69 B-body tabs and see what I had to do to make it fit, even if I were the first guy to do it. Sway bar tabs are NOT rocket science, but need to be located and welded with the suspension loaded (DAMHIK)...

Just ordered a pair ($52) hoping I can make them work..but that will have to wait till I get the engine back in..

So those Hotchkis sway bar tabs for a B-body showed up today. I think that I have to bend the tab for the shock bolt back to flat and grind one of the notches to clear where the LCA bends out at the bottom (wider at bottom than at top). At first blush if you swap the tabs right to left and turn them upside down it seems to put the tab at the right angle in relation to the LCA. I'll keep posting here and let you know how it turns out, with pictures.

So I spent some time today modifying the Hotchkiss B body mounts to fit an A-body. It was relatively painless and I don't have some of the metal shaping tools that would have made it easier. You switch which side the B-body tabs go on A-body LCAs and turn them upside down to fit at the bottom of the LCA, rather than the top. The mods are as follows:
cut a small area of weld to allow bending of the arms that rest flat against the side of the LCA
Reshape to arms to looks more like the ones on a stock A-body tab (they will never look exactly like that)
cut the notches at the base of the arms deeper so that they rest flat on the side of the LCA (the bottom rail of an LCA is wider at than the top rail of the LCA)
Bend the tab that uses the shock bolt on a B-body flat so that it can be used for the tab that goes under the A-body LCA
cut most of that tab off so that it just covers the flat part of the bottom of the rail.

Below are pics of the procedure and a comparison of the modified tab as compared to what Hotchkis sends you

Comparison of modified and unmodified in next post

My plan is to bolt up the bar with the links and make sure the geometry looks right and then weld the tabs in place after any last adjustments. One real advantage to using the Hotchkiss tabs and modifying them is that the tab itself, where the link bolts on, is actually BELOW the bottom rail of the LCA, especially on the outside, and at an angle to the bottom rail of the LCA. There is a complex bend in the Hotchkis tab that puts the tab in the right place and in the right orientation as compared to a stock A-body tab. If anybody sees a problem in the pics that are included above, please let me know what you see!!!

So here are some pics of the finished LCAs with the modified Hotchkiss B body sway bar tabs. I mocked them up on the car and made sure they were in the right place and then had them welded. All in all given the scarcity of 67-72 LCAs with sway bar tabs, this seems to me to be a good alternative. I'll use the ball socket links that were recommended in the October 2021 issue of Mopar Action and that will make the precision of the tab locations even less critical. last pic compares this to the lone A-body LCA that I have with a factory tab.

"I'll use the ball socket links that were recommended in the October 2021 issue of Mopar Action"
did a search but was unable to find it.
How about a link to this?
Thanks,

I got mine from Summit - HSS-23366

see posts above for modifications

How about a link to this?

I have no link - I actually get a paper magazine in the mail. Whole article on pages 38-41 - "Hey Sway!". For 67-72 A-bodies it is supposed to be a bolt on. Got mine from Rock Auto - P/N K750074. Looks good when I compare with stock links, but I haven't installed them yet.

That's a Moog part number for a Ford truck application. I got a pair that I'll be installing this winter. Like str12-340 says, looks to be a bolt-in for A-Bodies.
Amazon has them in stock for about $3.50 less each than Rockauto and free Prime shipping.

Thought I’d resurrect this thread. Now have a 66 Valient. I have the Bilstien shocks but also need a sway bar. I ordered some sway bar tabs from Peter Bergman. Got them today. Now trying to figure out fitment.

Is there a reason you didn't get the tabs that @str12-340 got ?

He laid out a pretty good procedure above with pictures for modifying the 66-69 B-body tabs

Well, frankly I pretty much did a internet search. Bergman was the only one that popped up. I wasn’t really sold on the “L” shaped tabs that most bars come with. I also did a search on FABO. This thread didn’t come up until yesterday and after I posted another thread under the general. Going to spend more time on the handling forum.
