I want to use some wheel hub stands to support the rear end of the car on both sides to maximize the access to the area around the wheel housing as I replace quarters. These bolt to the hub and support the weight like a jack stand. see pic of representative design. My concern is being able to rotate the axles independently so the base will sit correctly. Am I going to be able to rotate one axle and not the other. Essentially slip the Sure-grip? Trying casually with one tire on the ground I haven't been able to but I haven't really gone at it. I can't use jack stands under the axle because the car is already raised on wheel cribs and the mid-rise lift is in the way.

Thats a good question, I have some stands as well but have never tried them on the back of the car (got them for front end work).

Should be able to rotate them no problem. The sure grip is meant to 'slip' under normal conditions, that's why the need for friction modifier. If you jack up one side, put the trans in neutral, will the one wheel spin?

Car is currently sitting on three wheels with RR tire off and no engine or trans in the car. I have not been able to turn the RR wheel yet, even with a short prybar on the lugs.

Edit.... Correction. It will turn. I was either being a wuss or I needed a little more leverage. Put a heavier and longer square bar in there and was able to rotate. It isn't easy but it turns. Answers my question and now I'll get to making the stands.

I'm sure that there is some torque value that tells you the condition of the clutches/cone?

Yeah, they don't turn easy, but they do turn independently. Glad you got it figured.

You can test a sure grip by checking breakaway toque. I dont have the specs handy but they may be in the FSM.
