1965 MMP's Barracuda Hemi swap! The Ever Changing Build

-
So yesterday I was able to notch my oil pan get it fitted as well as the steering rack. Turn out to be easy install on both once notched. And the fitment is awesome! With lots of room.

Today I'll working on the trans mount. At first I was going to use a GM style auto mount. Kind of bulky but it bolted to the trans, I didn't like anything I came up with as a mount. Until I was laying there under the car feeling bla about the 3rd crap mount I built and was stairing at my rear-end and I remembered I have spool style bushings and the stock 545rfe mount that nice and tight to the frame. So I built this, now it's rough but I can clean it up it'll look nice when I'm done..

very nice fab work. My fab guys always laughs at me when I bring him another cocktail napkin idea. He knows it will likely take three tries before I'm happy.

i like the trans mount. what are you going to do where the rod ends attach to the plate? seems they would need to be anchored very solid to the plate to keep everything from being able to move laterally

I'm gonna notch and weld thick wall tubing over the tierod end with the notched ends welded to the plate. It will be ugly but should hold long enough for me to get out of the driveway before dropping the trans on the pavement..

Aww I see now... I got the "Super Top Secret build" lol. See he does not offer an Early A setup for the gen3 hemi swap "yet"
This is the reason behind the unwelded motor mounts. Another reason why I only gave myself 2 wks to get this buttoned up. Denny's been very helpful and willing to take on this project so I don't want him waiting on me for fitment pic's and feed back.
Ooohhh. That makes sense! I hadn’t realized that Denny didn’t offer a Hemi early A setup before this one.

So this weekend was tough birthday weekend from my boy.. But I was able to finish the mockup of the HDK setup before blowing it apart for powder coating. Next I'm going to pull the rearend back out and clean it up and get it ready for powder coating as well. Going to shoot for Friday drop off.

Also finalized the mounting for the transmission. "old picture" everything ground and polished clean before painting. But it will give you an idea of the finished product. will post more pictures

Okay so dropped off the HDK front end for powder coating this weekend should have it back in about a week or two. In the meantime I'll be finishing up the trans tunnel work as well as remodeling my Laundry room for the wife. Ugh
But I did pickup the srt manifold for the powder coating. Looks soo nice :D

That is going to be a beautiful car. To think what's the under the last of Barracuda shell is amazing. It should track well and raise some eyebrows!

This thread is one of my favorites, the innovation and creativity he shows is just amazing. Plus the fact he is a Marine! Semper Fi Brother! But to answer your question directly Denny, heck ya!

I knew it...I knew it....I knew it!

I just read though your post. Awesome build. I too learned really fast a early A with a Gen 3 and the stock steering gets really tight. Your pictures look just like mine lol. I also ended up going with a rack and pinion setup. Great build sir keep it up.

So not much of an update today. Don't have the K frame so got the car high on jacks lol and decide to weld in the trans tunnel this weekend and just as I started ran out of welding gas.. ugh and of course could not get it refill during the weekend :( so I'll do that next weekend.. (got the tank filled yesterday)

Last night wanted to tie up some loose ends on the motor it self so I cut down the heater hose tubes and relocated the mounts so I can fit and hide the hose's better which are a small change but made the fit soo much better. I also had to find a home for the Dakota digital dash cluster gauge / fan switch temp sensor. I had a hard time with this cause everyone on the interweb has an opinion and I didn't like any of the solutions offered. I even bought a DIYHEMI thermostat spacer but my temp sensor crashed into the cam sensor.. ugh BUT because I'll be running the SRT manifold I can mount the sensor on the back of the water block next to the stock efi temp sensor. All I had to do was drill n tap the back of the water block in the valley of the hemi block run a spacer and I'm in like FLynn'
In all hope I'm trying to run as much of the wiring harness through the valley under the intake to hide it a much as possible for that clean look ;-)

Love getting notifications for this project!
Btw, if you haven’t ordered coil overs yet, and these that I have for sale work for you, I’ll make you a deal on em!

haha Nice!
Yea as for the coil overs I already paid for them I just need to let Denny know which length I need and he'll ship them out. Thank you for the awesome offer tho...

So last night I got the trans tunnel in place and finished welded as much as I could (still have to the whole back half) . Then fitted the transmission to make sure everything was still kosher. I should have (finger crossed) the tunnel finished this weekend and the console mount placed. Then I can paint, seem seal it all, and add sound deadening. All hoping I'll have the HDK setup back from powder coating finger and toes crossed.
Also going to build some a bracing plate(s) I'll be needing to Reinforce the fire wall behind the petal box for a few reasons. One being I'm going to have to move the power brake booster over about 1.5" to clear everything an look tidy. I need to have a mounting point for the fly by wire throttle petal that mounts up on the fire wall near the petal box mount. Also I don't like or need the huge steering column hole below the pedal box. So going to remake the column/fire wall plate. My hope is I can get all the changes plus the pedal box mount to work together as one unit. Once finished and the K-member back in I can finish the steering linkage.
Here is a few pictures from last night, and a finished picture of my transmission mount.

I’ll be watching how you do the steering column through the firewall. I’ve been tempted to clean that up on my 65 also.

How much did you move you engine over? I centered mine which required me to move my complete pedal assemble. I ended up using after market setup in my build.
