Staying fit at any age.

So a few years ago in the midst of a divorce,
I decided to get back to working out and change me diet for physical and emotional strength.
I have never been fat in my life.
However prior to my divorce I was soft for me and went up one pant size.
That was the first time in my adult life I ever went up a size.
When I was younger there were times I was a 5 day a week gym guy.
I was pretty thick back then about 13 pounds heavier in muscle and a bit leaner then I am now.
I was also much younger !
So my diet changed to very little processed sugar.
I have never been big on carbs.
So that did not change.
I started working out again 3 years ago.
I could barely bench my body weight once back then.
I lost 22 pounds then put back 10 pounds of muscle.
Today I benched my body weight 19 times.
I feel so good emotionally and physically!
All it took for me was one day a week consistently and eating good.
I do zero cardio and I'm in excellent shape.
However my job is physical and that helps.
How about others here ?

Congrats on keeping the course. I had a similar challenge and with high mileage joints, shoulder and back surgeries it was tough to find a solution that worked. Flexibility was where I decided to focus and it's helped a great deal. I do mostly body weight and power bands to go easy on my joints. I also reevaluated my footwear and found that minimalist and zero drop footwear were a huge improvement.

Planning to add kettlebell workouts into the weekly routine next. You can get a full body workout, do it at home and not have some big machine soaking up space.

The other side of that is how you mentioned work being active. I'm a complete computer rat during the work week so I switched to a standing desk and do a majority of my yardwork and chores with hand tools

I also have injuries to deal with.
That is why I try to stay lean and keep my core in top shape.
Plus I vowed to never have moobs or be fat.
So as far as it depends on me and is in my control, I will maintain.

What is your age, Jim? I know it feels good when we're in good overall condition. Good for you for bench pressing like that!!

I'm 58. I feel like I'm in above average shape. But recently took a promotion into a job where I drive a lot and do computer work so I haven't been near as active for the past 4 months. I can feel myself going soft and need to do something quick.

I still do the calisthenics we did in the military and do 20 push-ups a day, but I've been eating on the road and need to change what I eat.

You give me inspiration!!
 
Diet wise I eat lots of hard boiled eggs, cheese, cottage cheese, avocados, oranges bananas
Some chicken ground turkey.
For me I think along with consistency is eating small portions many times a day.
 
I'm a year away from 70. Dropped over 40 in the last year. Brain keeps telling me I can do what I did at 25, body says no way. Still pushy to the limits when I can.

Avocados are supposed to be good for liver function.
 
My advice: Don't end up with two rounds of broken ribs---on the same side--one right after the other. "Just sitting around" trying to heal up had taken A LOT out of me--at 73-- and my shoulders will never heal.

I will agree with broken bones and sitting.
I broke my right shoulder in four places 5 years ago.
Broke the left ankle tri something they called it. plus leg bone that came thru.
2 years plus. . Have more plates and screws then the tin man.
I know it's hard but you just have to push thru it. Baby steps. Good luck.
 
I'm 74 with 2 metal knees and a back surgery. For our double nickel wedding anniversary my wife bought me the Sanjay Gupta book about keeping your brain sharp. She told me I said I would read it if I had it but I don't remember that. Good case for the book:) I'm about halfway through it and I am getting a lot out of the book. Diet and exercise are everything for brain health. If it's good for the heart it's good for the brain. That said, I am still working almost full time and building another car. It gives me lots of exercise and I monitor my sleep, resting heart rate and number of steps per day with a Fitbit. I am height weight proportional and reading this book has me thinking about re-joining the gym that I belonged to when covid hit. I like the idea of problem solving on my job and my hobby and for the last 25 years I eat homemade vegetable soup for breakfast every morning. I recently cut sugar out of my diet as I was getting too much and you know------the book-----------
My mantra is use it or lose it but after an active day I do hurt all over. Peace----out-----DR
 
For the record I have a home gym.
Lots of free weights.

Yeah... had to give up free weights with the shoulder surgery and joint instability. Part of it is my own fault. I should go lighter with increased reps but I get too pigheaded. :rolleyes:
 
I still go somewhat heavy.
I workout alone so I don't go as high as I used to.
I have gone as heavy as 230 on the bench recently.
 
I normally start at 135 and go up then back down .
Then incline with dumbells.
 
A lot of it is that my technique with free weights is poor. Machines were way more forgiving.

Running is still OK. I can hit a 10 Miler every now and again.

And on a trail hike with a light pack I'm set at 12 miles a day - lather rinse repeat

One thing I forgot to mention.
On average I drink 3 cups of tea per day.
The hardest part with tea or coffee was no sugar.
Occasionally I'll have honey in my tea.
I believe tea cleans you is full of antioxidants and helps release toxins ?
I use zero supplements.
My approach when I was younger was massive amounts of protein.
I would eat 200 or more grams of protein per day.
I ate so much tunafish I would gag on it.
Lol
Now it is all about maintenance!
 
I went to inflammation focus

Dairy, gluten ...HUGE difference in how I felt.

I still have my coffee and Bourbon vices but diet wise I just went to eating the best, real version of what I like. No added sugar

I'm 50 also, hung drywall and did framing ( res and comm) for years. Dr did say that don't mean squat. Cardio, he said. Full body, like jogging, bicycle, swimming. Diet sucks, HPB and Tachycardia. Hypoglycemic too. Always hungry, tapeworm style. You all sound like great inspiration! Thanks!
 
I have learned alcohol is the worst for loosing weight.
For me and I believe most men it instantly goes to the waist !
