hello,

I have a 72 340 being built at a local machine shop. the guy is just building the internal part for me and I"m going to finish the rest of it. At this point I know the block has been bored 30 over. he hasn"t given me the rest of the specs yet. My question is what type of Distributor should I use. I"m keeping the electronic connections but with so many distributors out there I get a little overwhelmed. Any help from anyone would be greatly appreciated. Thanks to everyone in advance

If needed send me the build information and I can tailor one for your needs.
Nothing wrong with a Mopar system as long as you have a good ECU.

Agree, just make sure you use a known good ECU. The orange boxes made in China today are junk. 65'

I like the MSD pro billet distributer. Easy to work on and set surves and bushings, easy to get parts (autozone ford parts) ball bearing instead of bushing.

A stock factory electronic, properly curved to your build should be just fine.

Summit has a nice billet one. It has Mopar top end (electrics. Cap, rotor, reluctor and puckup.)
Differs with a Ford advance mechanics. You can get a curve kit that has great instructions and lots of setup options.
- and not expensive.
My opinion.
YMMV.

If you're keeping the original Mopar look under the hood.
You can't go wrong with Halifaxhops.

Here's one of Halifaxhop's distributors in a 340... Just punch it from a 800 RPM idle and it will break the tires loose....

Stay away from Chinese [ Summit ] pro-form junk
like mentioned from other members the stock [ US ] made electronic units are a quality piece just have it built for your needs.

The best bang for the buck is a HEI dist. Self contained, no external boxes reqd that have more connections that can corrode/fail, cleans up the engine bay. They also produce more energy than the Chrys system, which is why you can 0.060" plug gaps with them. A hotter spark plug is always beneficial. HEI also has adaptive dwell for cooler coil operation & extended high rpm operation.
The best thing you can with an MSD fancy dist is.....leave it on the shelf at MSD. It will do NOTHING that a HEI dist can do except lighten your wallet. The HEI actually has an additional benefit, the larger cap. Reduces the chances of crossfire with a high output ign system.
I have used a great many $100 Chinese dists here. Never had a problem. They are well made, & when I strip them to put a curve in, tolerances are tight as they should be & the bits that need to be lubricated are.

What about the real Mopar chrome boxes? Not being an ***, just asking. Paul.
No issues with them good for high RPM's hardest thing is finding the right ballast resistor for them.

The issue is the New knock off boxes have a high failure rate.

Good stuff and they still surface on forum for sale , a Nos one was offered on site last wèek it sold before I could get to it.
Is this dual purpose motor or street only ??

I horted up 6 of those resistors and stalking 2 on ebay now !!!
Ebay comes thru from time to time but seller is asking like $49.95 for it currently.

Mine are all gone except one I use for testing them, on the street you dont need a $200 ECU who runs 9K on the street.
