People getting defensive at car shows!

-
My buddy has a real clean repainted new interior 1977 Camaro. He wanted to show it. I told him that I dislike it when people show their cars with the hood up. If I want to see the engine I'll ask to see it. Maybe its because I'm a bodyman. Anyway first time out, he got a trophy in his class and think having the hood closed helped him with that.
I like to see the cars that ain't in a show with the hood down too but I'm not gonna complain if it's open. Used to laugh whenever I had my 70 almost all original Challenger at a parking lot or a 'in the park' show and someone would say 'nice Camaro'. I'd just laugh and tell them to count the lettering or learn what a Camaro looks like. One guy turned back and said kinda loudly 'I know what a Camaro looks like' and he got some flack from others sitting about me lol.

Pan head machine screws, nylock nuts, bend the machine screw tail over when tight. Did that on my roadrunner, caught the guy trying to take the tag, bad day for him.

I had a duplicate tag made for my GTS. The original was safely stored in a safety deposit box along with the original build sheet.

Regarding the "original vs clone" debate, I'm more of the opinion of here's a store-bought car vs handmade.
(I prefer the customs.)
Let's put it this way, the original-spec car is not likely to be very competitive against the modified.

oRIGINAL BRINGS TOP DOLLAR COPETETIVE NOT SO MUCH, FIRST THING PEOPLE DID WITH SAY MY 70 SWINGER WASBUY RIMS AND TIRES...

Went to a show tonight. Before I even get out a see a shaker hood car. So I immediately walk up and start looking. A lady and two guys were sitting in front of it. I take a pic of the fender tag. Lady immediately asks me what I'm doing and says why do you think it's fake? I say I have no reason to believe that I just like looking at sequence numbers, scheduled build date etc. she then informs me the car was built in October or November. . Here's a pic of the tag. The car was beautiful!

well there r soo many clones out there

Why not? i'd be tickled pink to have someone that interested
Do you know how much fraud is committed each year using that kind of information? I don't either, but I can tell you it's a LOT. That's why most people (with any sense) cover up either some or all of their VIN when posting pictures in for sale ads and such. It's a smart thing to do. That's why I wouldn't want anyone taking pictures.

LOL
Stories get better each time they are told.
And us “Old Farts” repeat the same stories.
guess that’s why I’m loosing my audience!!

Certainly, If you don’t have 100K into the car, -
You have “Made it Yours”!

To hell what other people think. , ..
It ain’t theirs.

And most of the time, That is the problem.

Oh, and as the youngers speak. - “I’m jus sayin”

and I’m still laughing. LOL!

I always have something covering my vin, if someone does not believe it's a real 1970 340 Dart, to Damn bad. I kinda like it when some moron starts getting upset with me over MY car. yes I have no life!

I like that, slide a business card or something down the corner of the dash...t'hell with VIN number guys, may as well give your SSI and date of birth too...the only time a stranger should be checking your vin is if they are going to buy your car...

I have no interest in judged Car Shows. I go to Cruises. Friendlier crowd.
My vin is always covered and my fender tag is in the glovebox. My car is so obviously 90% NOT original but occasionally some one would lean on it to read the tag or vin.

People take pictures all the time. I don't care.
They never ask first. I don't care.
They never ask if it is all original. I don't care.
If it was a restored original 440 6pk Cuda it would be worth 10 times as much. I don't care.
Starting to see a pattern here? It's my car not thiers.
The confused look on their face when they walk up and don't see what they expect - priceless.
It wasn't original when I bought it and it won't be when/if I sell it
If I have offended any anal numbers guys,. Yep you guessed it, I don't care.

My H code 70 Swinger340 wont be 100% original, it wasnt when I bougt it, but I wilget it bac to original looking...etc. and make changes from there, I may get tired of the 205 70 14 wheels for instance...

I never take my car to shows, it's people in parking lots when I go somewhere, most people just like the car and it brings back memories for some of them, but every once in awhile...... My Dart is not 100% but it has the original drive train, I have "upgraded a bunch"

Jeff

There used to be a guy with an AAR clone who made the rounds of most of the shows in the South. He had a little metal plate hooked to a condenser that he would charge up some kind of way....and lay the little plate part over the VIN tag on the dash. The nosey rosies would reach in to move it, and it would knock the crap out of them! I got some good laughs out of that. I wish I knew how to charge up a condenser like that. It's a one time shot like a capacitor, and then you have to recharge it.

I took lots of pictures of a 1971 demon last week at car show and the guy was flattered that I was taking pics. I guess everyone is different. If I have the hood to my car open, and somebody takes pics, I have no problem with that.
IE but some people do have a problem with that that's why the common courtesy thing is to ask

That would be worth the price of admission alone to see that!

I agree 100%. In fact, I've stopped going to any events at all. We've not been since we were members (founding members) of the Middle Georgia Mopar Club. It got to where if you didn't have an original 440 six pack or Hemi "something" you got brushed off. Now all the officers in that club have all that stuff and just about ignore people who don't. I have zero use for them anymore.

I've even tried to join the Jones County Cruisers in my own county now. Every time I bring it up "yeah man, we'd love to have you". Then I see where they've had another meeting and nobody let us know. All the "big wheels" know who I am and have my number. I'm not gonna be up their *** all the time askin when the next meet is. So I'm pretty much done with car clubs and shows.

You own it.
They don’t.
They are “JELLY”

original cars are nice. But who has the $$ for that?

Run what you Brung.

The people at normal car shows just ruin it for me.
(not cruise nights or charity shows, for some reason everyone is happier and less cynical at those.)
I went to a cruise night at a local burger spot that happens once a month. Nothing too big, around 25 cars. I set up with my little slant 6 survivor and just start enjoying the show. Since I am the youngest guy there, wouldn't you know it; EVERYONE IS AN EXPERT all of a sudden. Most of the guys there were nice and liked my plans and what I had done, but at least 25% of them were just ripping me a new one over every little detail.
However, the next morning I went to another show. (formal judged type one) and the same thing happened. but this time EVERYONE IS A EXPERT. (over 90%) EVERYONE I talked to except three told me I was a.) doing something wrong b.) going to my dad and asking him questions about the car, (which is a honest mistake,) then when I started to answer their questions, they got all pissed and tried to talk over me!

All but three.

Well young Sir I would not worry about it at all. And make no mistake those folks rip everybody regardless of age. I often take my Cuda to shows just letting folks see another side of the hobby. I can assure you when you roll in with a beautiful Cuda unstrap from the roll bar, set all toggle switches to off and toss steering wheel on dash and climb out, them boys are on you like ants on a sugar cube. How could you do this to a Cuda, is the whole front fiberglass, is there nothing original on your car? I just shrug and say” that’s why your key don’t fit” But then some young kid swings by and I tell him it is fine if he wants to sit in the car for a pix, he looks at his Father for assurance and boom we are doing photo ops with the next generation of gear heads. The Father thanks me over and over and the kid is beaming with an ear to ear grin! Makes it all worth it.

Shock and awe I'm sure. They are just jealous they don't have a hot rod like that. I know I am.

My kids car is gonna be a 69 formula S 340 fake. Who cares, its gonna look cool. LoL
The difference between a fake, a clone, & a tribute is the creator/actor's intent. The problem is the intent is not transferred with the title.......
