Not sure if this is the correct forum to put this one but here goes. I’ve got a 2010 Ram that I bought new. The steering wheel is deteriorating and is pretty annoying now. When it’s wet or damp it’s leaves black stuff all over my hands. Has anyone replaced the leather wrap with good results? What did you use? I don’t really want to add a cover over top of this.

Clean and re-dye it, let it dry, then spray several light coats of clear lacquer rattle on it. Did my '05 on a sunny day.........

Humid climate and I bet you use hand lotion on a regular basis. See the same thing on seats in cars that women in shorts drive.

My original steering wheel (2002 Dodge Ram) got bad in spots from the heat and sweat etc. I covered mine with a Dodge steering wheel cover from Wal Mart for about $12.00. First one lasted 10 years, just got the same one again from the same place.

Have same one on my 2001 dodge ram. 5 years so far..

Sure didn’t seem like just a build up of crud. I’ll try cleaning it up again real good in one spot and see what happens.

It's not just dirt. The outer layer is coming off from age. try the above

Mine was doing the same thing mainly around the top and left side. It's the top coating that's worn away and the dye gets sticky, transfers to your hands. It will keep doing it if it's not sealed in.
A little tricky spraying while still on the truck, especially the back side, but it can be done. Protect from overspray.

Yeah, that’s what I was thinking it was. I thought I’d rather recover it than add another cover over it. Don’t really want a thicker wheel. But I’ll look at the cover you guys mentioned.

What products did you use? This sounds like what I’d prefer to do.

My Dakota RT leather wheel did that.

Could not find another leather one in about 5 years of searching, so I put a standard JY rubber wheel on it.

Eve though I miss the leather, it's MUCH less annoying.

I was scared to mess with the air bag, but it turned out to not be a big deal.

Thanks! I think I’ll give this a try. I’m comfortable removing the wheel to make this easier. Airbags sound scary to work with but it’s not real hard to remove the wheel.
