LA heads on Magnum block?

I know this has been asked/discussed before, but how do I use LA heads on a Magnum block? I searched the archives, but either it doesn't work right or I'm stupid. I read about oil-thru pushrods and oil-thru rockers, but nobody ever mentions a manufacturer/part number for those rockers. Also, can I use an LA cam and lifters in the roller Magnum block? See, I already have all these nice LA parts, but am only finding rebuilt Magnum short blocks for sale. Thanks.
 
If you have an early Magnum block, it will likely still have the oil passages drilled for the shaft mount rockers.
 
It's easy. Use a oil through lifter, (most are allready), and use PRW rockers with a oil through pushrod. LA came will work, but I'd stay roller
 
I've sold a bunch of those PRW rocker setups through my shop, PM me if you cant find a set.
 
I used comp pro magnum rockers when I put together my magnum block with LA heads, I stayed roller though

I already have those rockers. How does the oil get from the push rod, thru the adjusting screw, then into the rocker arm, and then to the shaft bearing area? Are the Comp LA rockers all made for this?
 
The adjuster screw has to be drilled and the contact area where the adjuster meets the rocker arm oiling hole needs to be recessed to allow the oil to get into the rocker arm pushrod hole. T&D rockers work this way as well.
 
OR you can have your machine shop locate and drill the block deck through for the oil passage to the heads. It is another option.

strip a rocker apart and all will be revealed. They need to be stripped and all the passages cleaned out if they are new anyway. They rarely get all the chips and grits out from the factory
 
IIRC, 1989-1992 blocks were the ones you want for a roller cam with LA oiling. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong. And I won't be butthurt.

I don't think you're wrong, but I've read that some of them went as far as into the 1994 models. But no guarantee that all of them in that year were. Suppose to have been a running change I guess.

My good friend built a fixture that bolts to the deck of a magnum block so the passage can be drilled from the deck to the cam journals. I used it successfully on a 97 5.9 block and 587 LA heads. Wasn't as scary as I thought.
 
This topic always goes back and forth. The Comp Cams stainless steel Ultra Pro Rocker arm (I think that is the name) had this feature and the PRW and Speedmaster stainless rocker arms were “modeled” after them. These rocker arms take a ball/ball pushrod setup.
If one of these rockers is used with lifters and hollow pushrods that oil through, no other oiling modification is required in most cases.

never done that BUT I have dome the opposite.... Magnum (EQ) heads on LA 318.

Not correct. We had a 95 360 Magnum motor here at a few years ago, pulled from a 1500. When it looked like Chris, @TurboGLH might need a block for his duster we pulled a head off of Matt’s motor and it was drilled for head oiling. Just an FYI.

If the block is drilled, the cam bearings need to be changed to get the oil up to the heads????
 
on my 2000 360 magnum that's in my 91 Dakota sport. I have Trickflow heads, comp 260 at 0.050 solid lift cam, PRW 1.6 roller rocker arms and 3/8th oil through Smith brothers push rods. also my lift is 594. if I was starting with a bare block i would of liked to had it drilled

Not many company's make rockers that allow push rod oiling. My short block was already in the truck when I decided to switch to the Trickflow heads. I didn't want to mess with the short block so I went with the push rod oiling Route. Which so far they seem to be working fine. My 360 has seen 7300 RPM a few times. Lol I still haven't got my converter pulled and sent off to get redone. To me I guess if you already had the Rocker set up and push rods for LA shaft oiling. I woukd of just had the block drilled. But seeing how I didn't have anything I just decided to go with push rod oiling. Pluse my engine with the Engine EQ heads was already set up for it. If it matters comp makes stainless steel rockers that allow push rod oiling, but only come in 1.5. My PRW you can get in 1.5 or 1.6. Harland makes rockers in 1.6 but you are getting close to $1000. Then Jessel and TD rockers which i take it are lots of money. I think the 1.6 PRW rockers with the correction kit from Mike at B3 racing was around $650 shipped.

My 360 magnum has a LA comp 550 solid lift cam in it with Howard's EDM oil through lifters

What price do they run through you? I was planning on running speedmaster rockers but they’ve been out of stock for nearly a year now! So unless they come back in stock in the next several months, I’m gonna have to go with PRW’s.
