Had to pull the pan on my new engine because the header has clearance issues. Saw a bunch of junk in the pan. Definite metallic content. This blows.

Cut the oil filter open and take a look there to. Metal shavings in a newly rebuilt engine is concerning to say the least! 65'

Kinda hard to tell, but if those are metal slivers....dammit.
Maybe the builder had to scrape the cam bearings and just didn't get all the shavings out?

Some magnetic some not. Non magnetic usually points to bearings. Bummed but I'll deal with it. Motor coming back out tomorrow.

Let me recommend cutting open your oil filter before you yank the engine. If you find a significant amount of metal particles in your oil filter then you'll have your answer. IMO 65'

I am not saying that something isn't wrong, but it's not abnormal to have a little something in the pan and oil filter, cut the filter open and see what's there. It's easy to scuff cam bearings when installing the cam. Same for piston install and first run.
Did you prime the oil system before start up?
It is easier to work on the engine when it's out, but verify if something is really wrong first.

I agree. I’ve cleaned the oberg filter so many times in the dry sump oil system on the 901 dyno my brother uses for the vintage cosworths he builds. A little bit of debris from first fire up is normal.

I don't necessarily see an issue. There are ALWAYS small metal particles in one after break in. Change the oil and filter, run it for a bit and drain the oil into a clean pan and inspect it. I bet it will be gone then.

Might be poor cleaning & residue left in the engine. Not sure I would be stripping it at this stage. Maybe install a new filter, put some miles on it, remove filter & check again. If residue is less or none, run it.

I fully agree with our friend from down under.

Some of the slivers had a chromish look. Like plating. I'm really worried that I run it and cause damage to crank/rods.

I did pull a main cap while I was under there and there was clear evidence of contamination. There was grooving And a few spots I could feel with fingernails.

If its a stroker crank with a chamfer , its easy to get the top and bottom rod bearings and or rods mixed up so that the rod and or bearings are riding on the chamfer , will cause issues similar to what you are seeing.

Try using a Jomar 100% No-Bypass oil filter when you get it back together. I had a valvetrain failure (destroyed all the needle bearings in the exhaust rockers) on my last build and none of the debris got to the bearings.

I'll never run my performance motors without one.

I pulled my 408 Six Pack after 4 mins of running due to a bad rear main seal. I understand what your going through :(

Yes it sucks big style but what can you do but roll up the sleeves and fix the problem. By the way your engine looks sweet. I like the painted heads. What kind of rocker arms are you running?

Comp Cams rockers. What it looked like before I started removing it.

think I woulda checked the bearing before pulling , maybe not needed -----?
I did pull a main cap. It was grooved and had evidence of contamination. Plus the chrome looking flakes had me spooked. There was a bunch of gritty crap and metal shavings in the pan. Pure piece of mind I need to look at it and make sure. Worst case I strip it doiand it looks alright. New set of bearings and gaskets and off we go. Just a few weekends no biggie.
