Need some help from the experts. Have a 1965 Dart Gt with a 8 3/4 rear end in it. The drivers side grease seal was leaking so a friend on mine and I have been working on replacing the seals. Pulled the axles and somehow the axle on the passenger side had been rubbing on the face of the outer seal. It was not leaking, but the metal part of seal was close to being worn through. While the axles were out I decided to do away with the green bearings and install the roller bearings.
Got seals installed, bearings replace and slid axles in. Tried to adjust preload on passenger side but the lock ring would not turn. Ring was binding on rise where axle bearing is pressed on. Removed axle and had area turned down thirty thousandths. Installed axle and there is no slack to adjust preload. Have I done something wrong? Scratching my head as what to do!
Am I correct in that part numbers were not stamped on factory axles? These axles have numbers stamped on them. Have ordered new lock ring to try.
Do I need to get new axles or am I doing something wrong installing these axles?

Post some photos of the rear housing where the axle tube meets the axle flange.

Also is it 5x4 or 5x4.5 bolt pattern?

Is the center thrust button in the correct place?

If need be i could get you oem axle lengths

Be sure axle seals are installed deep enough so that the bearing collar isn't hitting it. Measure the axle bearing collar depth and compare that with the depth of your seal.

axle seal was not installed correctly ,, i've seen this more than once ,, seal should have been driven in to the stop inside the housing end ,,face of seal should be approximately 1.675-1.700 inches from seal face to housing flange face when installed correctly to clear the lock collar for the axle bearing.

Can anyone tell me anything about these axles? Number stamped on them is 2800182 9 1 471. Have searched the web trying to figure out who made them, but no luck. Does it really matter?

2800182 is the Chrysler part number for the axle shafts used on 1966 thru 1972 abodies with 8 3/4 differentials. Axle length would be 27 11/16 inches.

After installing 'green axle bearings ', what preload is he talking about? He just removed the adj part.

To install the Greens, you have to remove the center thrust spacer.
When going from Greens to the tapered timkins then, you have to re-install that spacer, else your adjuster has nothing to push against, and I think it would be possible to drive the lock-collar straight into the side of the seal.

Sorry, I trans posed going from green back to the adj Timkin. Must have been the old greens without the snap ring?
