Hey all! I’ve searched and searched and I can’t find a good thread/ write up on a good rowdy/ daily 5.9 Magnum cam

I’ve got a ‘69 Dart fresh rebuilt 5.9 Mag in mine. All stock with a thinner head gasket .039 and some mild porting on the heads (de shrouded the valves, cleaned up runners, pencil necked the valves)

It’s a ratty driver street car. I’m looking for low/ mid range power and a noticeable, rough idle. I’ve been looking at the Hughes Steamroller 222int 226exh @.050 .549 .555 lift on 110LSA. The main reason I’ve been looking at it is because The Gas Tap on YouTube runs it in “Big Red” and it works very will for him on pretty much the same build with video evidence of it performing well.

I would love to hear some personal experiences with some cams, and I’m definitely open to regrinds! Thanks all!

put a oregon grind in the 5.2 Mag of my friends 70 Valiant.....car ran 12.7 so far with very basic mods (home ported heads, Aluminium intake, headers). It is a hydraulic roller 218 / 224 @ .050°, 110 LSA, i was afraid to get more lift due to the fact that there are no valve reliefs.....it runs pretty well with a nice rumble @ idle. Check their grinds out.

Your description of the cam requirements are a bit confusing. To maximise low/mid range power, the cam that will BEST do that will have a smooth or near smooth idle.
A cam with a rough idle is going to favour top end power, at the expense of low/mid range.

THIS ^^^^^^ Wise words form our Aussie neighbor from around the globe.

I just sent a cam to Oregon to be reground specifically for torque. This is what they recommend.

210/214 @ .050”, 260/264 adv, .506”/.506” lift, 111 sep., 900/5200

On RRR's advice, I went with an Oregon Cam Grinding regrind #1280.
.215/.223 @ .050.
On a 110
.517 lift at 1.6.

It's a good balance. Decent vacuum at 15. I like it.

What is your gear ratio and tire size?
Are you willing to change the torque converter?
At 222@050 duration, your more than likely going to need a change is stall speed.
Will you be running headers?

I am pretty sure the cam in Big Red is on a 108 and not the 110. I remember it being mentioned the cam is not on Hughes Website.

I specs are very close to the cam you mention. I had a screen shot of the cam card from the motor overview video but I can’t find it.

Gear ratio is subject to change around from a 2.94/3.23 to a 3.55/ 3.91 currently a 2.94 and very soon to be a 3.55. Tire size is 24” tall I believe. Yes convertor will be picked after cam is decided on. 1 7/8” longtubes on it aswell as an air gap intake.

I believe you’re right on the 108LSA for big red

I have 3:55's with 26" tall tires at the moment. I went with a PTC 9.5" converter. Great driver around town and fun when you punch it.

More and More people are talking about regrinds..

I have a LA 360 stock cam and Magnum 5.9. Can the LA cam be reground to a roller for a magnum? reason being...long vs short snout. tks
