My sister had a 74 beetle with the gas heater, and I drove one in my first "real" job delivering pizza when I was 16. The heaters worked ok, sometimes, but yes gas mileage was very poor, and it was always a bit odd seeing exhaust coming out of the front wheel well of a beetle.
