This is a true story that happened to me today.

I had some errands to run in town, and I decided to take the Scamp. It's not perfect - cracked windshield, 20 foot paint, driver door sags. Whatever. But it runs great and sounds great. My first stop was in the warehouse district and there happened to be some road work going on where I had to park. When I came out from my first stop, there were some construction workers loitering around my car. I had a good chat for about 25 minutes with them about it (and their cars as well), and they gave nothing but compliments, even though I was trying hard to point out my car's deficiencies. I exchanged phone numbers with one of the guys and we all shook hands.

Next stop was on the "other" side of town. I stopped for gas, and the guy at the next pump over started to chat me up about my car. It’s important to note that he was driving a new Honda Accord hybrid and wearing designer sweatpants with aviator sunglasses. Once again, I pointed out that it was not perfect, but I still like it. He agreed that it was indeed not perfect and began to squint and look down the body lines. He didn't hesitate to point out that one of my quarter panels had had some body work done, and that there was some rust here, the hood wasn't aligned properly, and a dent there. I think I counted three times that he said my car "needs some work" in the short time we talked.

Water off a ducks back your paying the bills if it makes you happy that’s all that counts. Had both sides of the coin at car shows. Praise I say thanks. Running it down I say well that’s your opinion and in my opinion it sucks.

I'm surprised by the positive responses my scruffy cars get. It'll be weird if I ever have one that's nice and painted, but it will be driven just like any car I own.

Cars are made to be driven. And while compliments are great, I’m also not opposed to criticism. However, I feel that there’s an unspoken rule, some etiquette, about how and when to criticize a stranger’s car.

I never knock anyones car no matter what. I wouldn't even think of doing it.
I also dont form opinions about what kind of car a person drives or how they are dressed.
People who are truly into cars appreciate all makes and models

Guilty as charged.

At first, I was all into talking to this guy, until I began to feel offended. Then I felt myself judging him, perhaps as some sort of defense. I thank you for pointing that out.

When someone points out "defects " with my car, I politely ask "what kind of classic / muscle car do you have?

That usually shuts them up!

In the way the guy remarked to you he was certainly an asshole. It takes all types in this world and you just happened to meet a real loser...... I took the 69 for a front end alignment over the summer and this guy pulls up to get a inspection done, driving a newer Porsche, casual but very well dressed.
The ray bans, expensive watch.
Guy went nuts over my car..... He was a car guy, maybe not classic's but a car guy never the less.
You're not guilty, just well mannered.

There are more than two types of people. I know my 54 year old plymouth isn't perfect but I wont say one disparaging word about. That would only open the door for others to do the same. If they break the ice with "nice ride", my reply is "Thanks, I like it".
If they start out with pointing what I already know, what a new paint job would do for it, It needs some mag wheels, etc.., My reply is, "Wait here for a nicer one to come along. Have nice wait". So you and I are two more kinds of people.

Walked out of a store a couple of weeks ago, 2 people were standing by my Dart, couldn't hear what they were saying. As I got closer, the guy walked away and the woman asked if it was my car, I said it was, and she replied "nice car". I said "thanks, but I disagree, I know it's a pos". She said "well, you don't see them anymore, and I do like it". Cool.

The TV car show watching guy just had to tell ya all the things his expert eye can pick out...:)

My Barracuda is finished as much as it ever will be. It's got all the usual "owner built" defects but it never fails to bring the compliments and conversations that come with it bring my daily driver. I don't show it anymore though for the above mentioned reasons. Too busy with another build anyway.

I'm sure my Dart will be the same, but I intend it to be a driver. No trophy winner here unless I get lucky...:)

My dart isn’t a daily driver nor is it a show car it’s just a car I bought in 74 as a punk same everything except rebuilt motor because as a punk I blew it up. 52,000 on clock and all it’s war wounds. So if you got problems with the body work take it up with Chrysler because that’s the way it came.

Agreed wannabes always have all the answers and none of the ability’s or finances to be able to partake in owning a muscle car
This guy admitted that he didn't have an older car, but certainly was proud of the fact that he had an airplane and was a private pilot. Maybe he was just looking for someone to boost his self esteem for that day.

I find most people that like old cars not to be to judgemental like that. The '63 in my avatar is scratched, dented, and rusty but I always get compliments on it.

I won a best in class with my last fox body Mustang the first time I entered it in a judged show. That was also the last time it was in a judged event, did a few show and shines and lots of cruise nights, same as my 70 Dart, but they were both built as daily drivers and were treated to plenty of red line shifts and smile inducing behavior. :D
The 75 Dart Sport is as good as it will be, rattle can flat black paint and and dents.
