A little more oomph

@furrystump can I get some pics of your firewall since it’s heater and a/c delete? I have some body plugs from newer stuff and a homemade cover for the heater. But am curious what OE looked like.

Rat Bastid,
Quote or show the post where I said AFB/AVS are vac sec carbs. You cannot because I NEVER stated that & never would because thy are NOT.

Not factory delete. What I did was look at every picture I could find of the lower motor plate. That is what I made, it is as close to the pictures I found. I used bolts from the inside to look like studs. For the heater holes I just made the normal small rectangle that goes there, but didnt drill the holes. For the cowl opening underneath. A plate with a stud to a cross bar inside the cowl.

Getting a picture of a real BO29 barracuda blower motor plate. Just have to get him to put down the donut long enough!

Rat Bastid,
Post #47. You keep getting it wrong. I didn't get it wrong. Get some new glasses. There was a once only vac sec version of the AFB for one year in 1957 used on a 312 Ford engine. Which was the vac sec version I was referring to in post #44.

Yep, a convoluted one year only carb. Who cares? I don’t care what Carter did. I’ve laid out why the Holley is almost always the better choice. I’ve laid out why the QJ is the most tunable carb out there if that makes you happy. I’ve laid out the shortcomings of the Carter/Brocks carbs, which I will add the only thing I care about less than what Carter did is what Edelbrock did or even does. I made it very plain so even you could see the difference. And yet, you hold to your fantasy that the Carter/Brock is some ingenious carb that beats all comers at everything. One could make the argument that a set of Weber’s is an even better choice. I wouldn’t because giving up power isn’t what I consider as a good plan. Again, who cares what Carter did in 1957? If it was so great it would still be manufactured. If it was so great, so innovative, so ahead of its time don’t you think Edelbrock would bring it back? Yet they haven’t and they won’t. There isn’t a market for a carb that didn’t work in 1957.

If the heads get pulled.......
Have the seats cut for 1.88 intake valves.
Blend the bowls, and open up the pinch area a bit.
Mill them about .030” or so.

After reinstalled, get some headers.

talking to a guy with 302 heads with 188 valves. Hope that makes things work

Rat Bastid,
All I can say is you are...delusional. You misread things, then blame somebody else for your mistake.

Cylinder is packed full of crap. Not sure. They were all gapped the same. All rocker arms moving correctly.

Oil fouled, bad rings or cracked valve guide. imo
White smoke is an indication of burning water, blown head gasket or cracked head ?

Gonna do leak down and compression test soon and find out. Hoping just valve seal letting oil dump in there. Guess we will find out.

White smoke both sides: could be faulty brake booster/master cyl drawing in brake fluid.
White smoke one side: most likely coolant drawn into the cyl, the cyl that has light coloured crap on the spark plug.

there would be an indication of brake fluid on the plugs.
water and anti-freeze tends to keep them clean if they fire.

Well here’s what I ended up doing: I bought some 302 heads that already had 1.88/1.60s in them. I spent about 18 hours porting them after watching videos, especially @MOPAROFFICIAL videos on porting 302s (thanks btw). I did not do quite as much as he did on the videos but I did as much as I was comfortable with. I had a 3 angle valve job and heads resurfaced. I lightly ported my performer intake just to get the ports opened where they neck down for the small port heads. I had issues with intake lining up. I believe the prior owner may have slightly milled the heads, but I’m not pulling them off to find out more. I found some Hedmans that were new in the box since the 90s.

Fired it up last night. Took about 30 seconds tuning the carb and took it out. I did not retime it. HUGE difference. Last year my buddy’s 454 Chevelle would pull on me but last night I hung with him fine. Was really surprised. Car needs a little more timing and probably a little bigger carb. Very happy with the results other than the VHT not holding up lol. Appreciate everyone’s input along the way. I wouldn’t necessarily say I’m a 302 head fan now, but I’m a fan of the right combo with the right port work, and I believe on my little 318 with what all has been done, it’s a nice little combo. I’m sure there’s more in it with a performer rpm or air gap and a 650 Holley, but for now I will enjoy the setup and seeing what I can do. Thanks for the input guys.
