Looking for recommendations for a transmission rebuild in the central Indiana area. I have a 904 connected to an existing 273 but will be swapping it out with a 340 with the below build.

1970 340
  • 10.5 pistons
  • 557 lift 292 duration solid lifters
  • .208 intake 1.4 exhaust valves
  • Triple valve springs, titanium retainers
  • 3/8 Chromalloy pushrods
  • Crane Gold roller rockers 1.5 ratio
  • 800cfm holley
  • Dougs headers

If you are looking for someone to put together a 904 for you, see John Cope (Cope Racing Transmissions). He is in Lowell IN. I have had a 904 behind my 408 with 550+ HP for many years, street use. Not one hiccup!

Check the year of the 273 & trans. Early 904 converters had a smaller snout than 340 cranks and you couldn't just swap converters because the splines were different in the transmission.

"True" triple valve springs are too much for a conventional flat tappet cam, unless they are doubles with a damper.

Valves???

CRT is not building trans anymore...just selling parts

Engine is date coded 64-66 so may need to do a full new trans to match up to the 1970 340

Need to check the pilot hole size in the crank. If it's the early small one, then you can change the converter and input shaft, unless you have a 66; conventional shift lever; then change the whole trans to a 71-later.
