Where do I find a correct trunnion boot for a 1964 Dart 4-Speed. What size do I need? I see large and small listed.
Thanks

You need a small boot.
Small = A body. Large = B body.
Laysons.com has them.

If cheap and resourceful like me, I vaguely recall someone found a common boot which fits. A VW Beetle driveshaft rings a bell. Perhaps a split-type you glue together if don't want to risk pressing out the pin. Perhaps I am confusing with the IRS boot on my 1985 M-B. I went to the Layson's site, but see no links.

Hi Rick,
I will be calling you. I just need to see if I need a whole kit or just a boot.
Thanks Bob

You don't have to press the pin. The boot will stretch around it.

I never did one, but watched YouTube and it looks like it could be difficult but do able
I pressed the pin out of mine when I did it last time, and several people here told me it wasn't necessary. Sure nuff, there's enough room to do it without pressing the pin out.

Thank you, I will try it.

I'm actually fixing to do mine again. The new boot I put on it about two years ago has split already. I may write up a how to on it. I plan to do it this time without pressing the pin out.

I'm curious about which boot you used last time. I would expect a new boot to last more than two years.
I guess they don't make much of anything like they used to.

I just picked one off ebay. Kinda disappointed, but what can I do? I'm not gonna hide under the kitchen table cyin about it. I'm gonna replaced it. Again. lol Maybe it was an old one. Maybe it was just a crappy one. I don't know. It has no signs at all of any road debris hitting it. It's just split, you know, like old rubber does? Oh well. lol

Buy a new old stock one off eBay, nothing compares to the originals.
That's what my last one was, I'm pretty sure. I think that's why it cracked all up. From bein on the shelf fifty plus years.

If you don't remove the pin, you can't remove the trunnion housing. If you don't remove the housing, you have to feed the boot through the narrow end of the housing. I've never been able to do it. No amount of pushing, squeezing, feeding or cussing would get the damn thing through the hole. My 65 Barracuda's ball and trunnion set up is long gone now, but I still have four more cars with those ##^$&@%# set ups. I know they are higher quality and theoretically smoother than a conventional u-joint (although I've never been able to feel the difference), but I hate them with a passion.

The original boot didn't last that long. And the replacements are worse. The boots on every ball and trunnion u-joint I still have are split.

There used to be an aftermarket replacement leather cover that just wrapped around where the boot went and then was clipped together and clamped on. So you didn't even have to remove the driveshaft to put it on. Also, being leather, it didn't split like the rubber ones. I watched a gas station mechanic put one on my Dad's 62 Polara 500 back when the car was only six years old. Haven't seen one of these in ages, though, and I doubt they are still available except as NORS on ebay like the one below.

Very interesting. That leather looks like something you would find on a Model T. I think they didn't shield suspension and drivetrain parts very well then, if at all, so owners would have to stop and re-grease parts as they drove on long trips. I'm pretty sure someone could find a split-boot part that would work, and vaguely recall someone did post something. The ball & trunnion wasn't just used on Mopars. I have a long list somewhere and recall the A-body size was used on something like a 1968 Jeep Wagoneer.

People have used axle boots from pre-69 VW Beetles. I tried one and failed. There is also a Nissan CV boot that supposedly fits.

1964 Valiant.
I used an ATV boot.
All Balls #19-5008. Currently $13.20 on Amazon. Took a little slicing and dicing and I did not remove the cross pin.
What warranty is on the Laysons part?
