In the past I just ran them with the shipping paint.. or bought ceramic coated headers.. currently I got a brand new set of hedman headers off of Craigslist for dirt cheap that someone didn't use on their project.. I put a little test spot of paint remover stripper and it didn't seem to work very well?.. just wanted to hear what work for other people??..
Thank you..

I am using a set of Hedman headers that I purchased new. I used an acetylene torch through and on the outside of the headers then scotch brite pads. Cleaned and painted than ran for a few times 10-15 minutes let them cool, or whatever the manufacture recommended. Used a high quality header paint and they still look like new.
Good luck with them

Aircraft paint remover, Kleen Strip brand. It ain’t cheap but it works. Can’t remember what I used it on, I only remember it was pricey and that I was impressed by how good it worked. It’s been quite a few years since I last used it, that much I do remember!

Rustoleum aircraft remover will work. I stripped my Dougs headers an turned out nice. I used heat primer as well before top coats

None of the new paint stripper works like the old stuff. The aircraft stripper isn't what it used to be, they are all about the same.
They took Chloride something out of them.

Best to get them sand blasted if you want a nice appearance. I'm going through the same thing. Found a local who will blast them for 60.00 when his does his next job. Otherwise 125.00 if he does mine alone. I'll wait and save $.

Eric..

yep, i get a mate to blast mine either when fitting new or when i've made headers for a swap. then i hang them collector down and stick my heat gun in the collector all the time i'm painting them so all the tubes are hot and bake the paint on as it's applied.
neil.

They took the methylene chloride out of it. Pretty nasty stuff, but it made it work!

Well after about 4 or 5 rounds with the last half of the gallon of jasco paint remover I got most of it... Then I got to my drill and wire wheel and got the one that's standing up on the left pretty good. Then I ran out of battery power so I need to continue with the one on the right on the floor a little bit more... There'll be no getting into the deep crevices but I think the concern here really is just to get the areas that you see the most and that should clean up..

The better paint removers will have methylene chloride in them. Nasty stuff but it works.

I have to ask, what better paint remover? I had 2 wheels stripped by powder coater, the bead area repolished , sand blast the spokes, paint and then repowder coat the wheel. A 55 gal drum of what he uses for stripping is $900, and you can't just go to the hardware store and buy it. The last gallon that I bought of the good stuff was the last gallon a hardware store had. I told the owner the problem that I was having with the new strippers and did he have any of the good stuff left. He had 1 gallon left and said he just wanted it out of his store, I paid $20 for it, that was 2 years ago. Sand blasting is probably the easy way to go.

In order to keep this blindingly good deal on these new headers I had to think of a way to do it myself. I still had a half a can of that crappy paint stripper and used it all on these two headers and didn't get all off by any means. I did still have a lot of wire wheeling and elbow grease to put into them. We can also add in the $35 for a can of flame proof primer and two cans of paint... The last time I had a couple small pieces of sandblasted they were $60 each. So I'm thinking 120 bucks for sandblasting plus the $35 for paint. Keeping that in mind if I was to have to buy these new I would probably just buy the ceramic coated ones and considerate a great deal... Although I think flotech sells unpainted ones... I'm seriously not seeing the need for expensive headers for a truck...
