Edelbrock SBM big valve heads on clearance

-
I have been wondering what these heads really are. The description says large port, which makes me think it’s a replacement for the old large port commando heads, but they list the port size as 174cc. It does say requires offset rockers.
Mancini occasionally has a run of heads that are replacement versions of heads used on some of the crate engines. I think that is what these are.

"W" I'd say Eddy's version of W5 heads.

They sure don't look like a W5 head. (exhaust ports) They do require offset rockers.

Note the last line "P5153850"

I bet they are super commandos. I have them on my 408. Basically Aluminum edelbrocks with moved intake valve position, sold with a mopar perf PN, And they take a rocker arm setup that was never actually produced anywhere.

I had to take my heads to Harland sharp to get a set custom made. They are not w2, they are not t/a. They are a different offset entirely.

On a flow bench they weren't miraculously better than a standard edelbrock on a 4.030 bore. On an R block, they might be. I put alot of $ into having them ported, and the valves un shrouded, and I think I still only got 285 out of them peak, on Trickflows flow bench.

Mopar Performance LA Cylinder Head - P5153850

I'm pretty sure mine even had 2.1 valves. So typical "Mopar performance" contract someone to make something, data is half accurate, they make 200, and are discontinued before the ink in the catalog is dry. Hence....no rocker arms.

Not a bad head, but you won't be running a $500 set of rockers on them.

pretty sure they are the same thing as the "Indybrock" heads, or "Indy-TA" heads.

For what it's worth, I pulled the instruction sheet out of my file cabinet this morning. Same PN. I can't tell what they are actually selling in the listing being the stock photos, but the mopar pn they give matches mine.

Exactly........ well kinda.

If Mancini had a bunch of those to unload, they should think about having some rockers, based on their in house HS rockers, sourced for those heads and offer them as a package deal.

The headache for most, as JM pointed out is........ no off the shelf rockers available.

I’m taking it the listed price is per head (one). If so I would invest in a set of TrickFlow heads.

that link isn't working for me.
I emailed Mancini and they do have rockers arms that HS designed for these heads. I was thinking about buying a set of the heads and the rocker arms but came across some IMM prepped Indy Xheads.

It would make for a good dyno shoot out(just another one that will never happen).

These Mopar heads with a mild bowl blend vs the TF heads on some mid-level 408/416 type build.

I wonder if the new BPE cnc program would fit in that casting?

it would.
i found some old posts from @ou812 about the moved pushrod edelbrock variant heads and he seemed to really like getting the hump out of the int port to settle the flow even it didn't actually increase flow much at all. I'm talking about posts from 8-10 yrs ago though when there were alot less heads to run.
so at this point, these heads might make sense for some builds. they are about the same price as regular edelbrock heads now, mancini has rocker arms though they aren't listed on the site.

I wish that edelbrock or afr would have a cylinder head for the 318. Edelbrock has a cylinder head for the small bore small block Chevy and afr has the afr165 for the 289 / 302's.

The edelbrock head is fine for a 318.
