W2 408 Dyno results today !

If your friend is going to test a lot of different things, a month isn’t really all that long. Of course, if all goes well it may not take that long.
He is going to break it in NA with a carb likely and then install the pro charger and EFI…I think it will make 700 plus NA…

How much is a dyno day on that side of the puddel?
I see you get quite much more data from your session that i did over here.

He charged me $600.
He got the engine on Thursday and set it up on the dyno / tore the carb down and mic'd all the orifices . Then on Friday I stopped by around 2 pm and we did a breakin run/ leak check for 30 mins . On Saturday I arrived at 10 am and we spent until 8 pm .

I would say I got my moneys worth .

It’s unfortunate the air turbine wasn’t being used for the testing.
It’s a great tool for helping to find valvetrain stability issues.
My experience has been, that when the power makes a fairly sudden drop...... like in one line...... it’s often a valvetrain stability problem.
When in doubt...... try and go a few rpm higher....... especially when the top of the run is at a pretty modest rpm anyway.

I’d like to see the fuel flow numbers myself......... the bsfc numbers are fairly poor(how efficiently the motor is using the fuel).
493 hp is more than I will ever need on the street but that doesnt mean I am not interested in understanding why it fell off so abruptly after 6k and how to stabilize the cyl to cyl AFR and the lower rpms. And how will the tunnel ram effect it . That will be interesting .

This was mentioned briefly in post 61, but nine pages in, has not been addressed since then. What was done, or checks made to ensure the valvetrain was properly set up to remain stable?

I had some guy help me with the valvetrain alignment and he said it looked great !

His name was Mike B3 something...
Lol

LOL! Ha, I can't remember everybody, even though I try. Glad to know it was addressed.

Yeah that same bunghole fixed me up with my slant 6. lol

Update on the engine ....I finally got around to verifying the oil level by pulling the upper overflow plug and draining 2.75 quarts ! When I filled it before the dyno run I just kept adding oil until the dipstick showed full using 5qt jugs...if I had to open 8 1qt bottles I am sure an alarm would have gone off in my head.
I remarked my dipstick lol

No dyno guy ever said “hey, my dyno reads a bit hot so don’t worry about the numbers”. Everyone always has a stingy dyno when the numbers don’t meet expectations. I was watching a BBC on a chassis dyno...must have been 2006 or so. Anyway, it was on the dyno for hours and they beat 985 crank hp out of it. Single 4, 572 inches so that was pretty good. And that was in the guys car, with his headers, ignition and all that. The dyno guy was getting tired of all the bitching by the car owner so he said “I’m going to make a major tuning change, and if it works it will make a big number and if it doesn’t it’s tapped out”. They made 3 more pulls and boy howdy, there it was 1020-1030 on the three pulls. The owner was ecstatic that his stuff went over 1000 hp on a single 4. While they we loading the car up I asked the dyno guy what the big change was to get that power. He said I didn’t change a damn thing. That was as good as it was going to get. I just adjusted the correction factor in the software to shut him up and make him happy. I suppose it happens more often than not.
When we dyno my 471 can you have it print out question marks instead of numbers?

Are you saying it had 2.75qts too much in it?

Between that and the porting I did on the intake I am hoping for around 30 hp and another 700+ rpms .
But I will never really know .

In a SBC circle track engine, that had a very nice pan with a kick out, windage tray, baffles, etc......it lost 35hp by having 2 qts too much oil in it.

I would expect an over fill of 2.75qts to make a very noticeable impact on power(down 30-50hp at the upper end of the power curve wouldn’t surprise me).

It’s the kind of parasitic loss that would show up as poorer bsfc numbers, and would get worse as the rpm went up.

That sounds spot on ... it would explain the 6200 rpm peak and sudden drop in power after 6200 and rising bsfc .

It's your hobby and what you enjoy doing.... And you ain't gonna be happy with your number. Make a plan and goes version 2.0 on the Dyno. I came up short on a build once and worked more OT to fix the issues and make more pulls. I was glad to have done it and you would too. You've got a nice build....

I wont do another dyno session . I have a baseline and the corrections I made should bring me to 520ish +.

This is a street car that will ocassionally see the track.
It idles nicely and will putt around in 1st so what else can I ask for .
And it doesnt leak ! Lol

I hear ya..... I left over 50hp on the table and it was just a personal goal. Street car, no bar, same as you, but the number left me ill content lol.... You make plenty of power now to get thrown out of a track...

I actually did 3 dyno sessions. The first was an actual engine dyno. After that we made some pulls at AED performance then made the changes and went back for a followup. That was actually the cheaper route if you ever feel the zeal to do it again...

520HP + when you drain the extra 2.75 quarts of oil .
How did you, how could you. lol
No more head scratching now, a very nice build that will produce the power for the sum of the parts 520HP +.
Very nice engine you have there.

I will do a chassis dyno in the future when I slap on the tunnel ram . But that wont be for another year or more .

I did.. and could .. because I was distracted and using 1 Gal jugs to fill it while checking the dipstick every so often . I had a feeling in the back of my mind that something wasnt quite right . I told myself to pull the overfill plug at the dyno shop before the session but forgot due to all the stress and excitement of a dyno session .
Evrything you have learned and experienced drips out your ear once you walk into the facility ! Lol

"What brand of engine is this ? "

Ah...ah..ah... Pontiac? I mean.. Studebaker? Doh ...! Where am I ?
