I took a 5 gallon jug of drain oil to the local quick lube place yesterday. One of the young guys asked what I needed so I told him "I have a jug of drain oil to drop off". He did not know what drain oil was, so he said "what is that"? Finally he said, "oh, you mean used oil". Ugh.

That’s a term I haven’t heard used in a long long time!

Maybe he thought you said "Brain Oil"

I've never heard it called drain oil either? I'm same as the kid....used oil. It's funny how things are called something different in different regions...lol.

It's been "drain oil" my whole life- "used oil" just sounds weird to me... I pour it through a paint strainer and burn it in my "waste oil" shop heater.

"Dooryard" (pronounced doy-yad) New England for garage

Pop vs soda vs coke

But I too have never heard it called "drain oil" makes me think it is oil you would put in a drain.

Just an FYI for you guys. The facility taking in used oil is required to ask about its source as to not contaminate their oil storage tank. The waste oil companies that pick up the oil always test it for contaminates. ( solvents, flammable's etc)
If it is found to be contaminated, they have to isolate it from the rest of their load and can charge up to several times the normal pick up fee.
Of course all you oil change guys knew that...

The solution to pollution is dilution!

It came out of the earth, you are just replenishing the stores.

Not to mention carbon sequestering!

Never heard of drain oil. Used oil.
I never, ever, heard that term used before, either.
And i was a professional, wrenching auto mechanic, in the trade, for 30 years.
Grew up in New England, and that term wasn't used there in those states, and not here in Commiefornia, on the west coast where i have been since 1976.
So don't criticize that kid behind the counter by not knowing.

FYI
If you came into the shops that i was employed at, i would have said the same thing.
"WHAT"

I have heard it called "drain oil". Not very commonly, its usually called old, used, or waste oil.

I have been working in a bulk petroleum plant for 23 years. We call it used motor oil or used lube oil. The waste manifest would say used motor oil, petroleum distillates.

Never used it, never heard it, but I would immediately know what someone was talking about.
