Buddy gave me a 62 , 413 w/ forged crank.413 .060 over is a 426 which is the basis for the 426 Max Wedge. If what I read recently, the 426 Stage 1 was 380 hp, the Stage 2 was 400 which included a better camshaft and 11.1 CR, Stage 3, was a Stage 2 with 12.5 to 1. Apparently the Max 2 and 3 heads were not std RB Or B heads but built fir the 426 Wedges. I would love to see a. Wedge head next to a Hi Po RB head
Anybody got pics. ??

No pics, but, the intake and exhaust ports are much bigger. Also, no heat crossover for choke.

That was easy.

Almost forgot, i met a guy at Garlits Show Last weekend, he said there was a Stage 4
Engine. That was 520 hp ?????????

Im not Even going to ask what they are worth !!
The info you were given is WAY wrong, and in the case of a 520hp stage four, pure horseshit. If you want the real poop, and more info than you will ever need, Google Greg Lanes maxwedge and race hemi pages.
(Example,no such thing as a stage one, they were never called that, 413 high compression max was rated 420hp, low comp was 410, etc.)

Just did some research, new stage lll heads, bare, same casting as 62-64 Max Wedge
They flow 300 CFM. $1300 bare !!

Good to know !

As we all know, the Mopar racing program through parts sales continued to sell "Stage" heads and many other Mopar Performance parts, but they were no longer Max sized ports past the FACTORY offered Stage III heads. I do have a set of stage III heads (518's), but no pix handy ATM. The ports are def. huge and no heat crossovers, as others have said, and std. six bolt valve covers.

These are all bought up and no longer offered..... havent seen any on the market for eons.... you can spot them if you find a set, cus they have the "M" cast in to designate Mopar aftermarket.

Those (518) are the late 63/early 64 versions. The 413, and early stage two 426 (my 286s) are all four bolt covers.

Most places I looked at said discontinued, however 2 places said they were available. Maybe they need to update their website

Dwayne, did you flow those 518s before you ported them? My theory is that 906s untouched are around 215-225, and the maxwedge are around 250-260 otb. Would be great to hear what numbers you found. Thanks.

There were at least 3 “runs” of the 518-M’s.
The ports got mildly revamped each time, and it seems they got a little better each time.
I’ve had the version with the 2.08 intake valves, from the various runs, flow from the low 260’s up to about 280(@.700 lift).

On my bench stock 906’s are mid-220’s to mid-230’s.

Original 286’s are in the 250 range at .500 lift, but will be up in the 270 area at .700.

Edit, I see the first set I had here, that were from the early run(freeze plugs in end of head).......
They got 2.19” intake valves installed.
With just the seats and bowls cut, no blending the intakes only flowed 257@.700.
The early heads had the chambers pulled in near the intake valves, so the bigger valve wasn’t much(any??) benefit until you opened up the chamber.

It was a fair amount of porting to get those to 300+.

Thank you, Dwayne. I have a decently pro-ported (done a long time ago) 286, recently freshened by IMM. I should have had them flowed. I'm kinda hoping for 275 at .600.
Edit. Mine are still the original 2.08/1.88 combo. The new 1.88s weren't an easy find.

I’ve ported 286’s with 2.14 valves that just tickled 300@.700.
That’s a “normal” porting job, not pushing the limits of anything.

I also had a set of them here done by Kaase, they flowed a couple cfm more.

The 286 exhaust port kinda sucks for its size though.
