Can I add a Sure Grip to an existing open differential? Case is a 742 8 3/4 on a 65 Newport. Plan is to swap to my 67 Dart.
Thanks!

Skill level needed?
I'm not saying this as a smartass in any way shape form or fashion, but if you have to ask what skill level is needed for a job, you probably need some help. We have lots of members in Florida who I'm sure would be glad to help. It's really not "that" bad a job, but if you've never done it before......

Believe it or not but if you have a factory service manual and read the differential section start to finish multiple times (as if you were in school studying, being educated) it is quite possible to actually understand what’s involved, how to disassemble, inspect, and rebuild what you have. It tells you everything that you need to know, and what tools are needed. And depending on ones skill level, whether they have access to only a few specific tools needed, and/or abilities to improvise tools as needed, it is not as complicated at it may seem. My first attempt (successfully to boot) at rebuilding a 727 transmission was done using only the FSM, and lo and behold my first attempt at rebuilding an open 8.75” adding new gears and a sure-grip was also done with only the FSM for reference. Study and re-read, it can be done with just the FSM, but along with the web, forums like this one, abundance of pictures for reference it’s a piece of cake

Do you own a dial indicator?

^^^I agree, there are some specialty tools required for some jobs!! Some are worth investing in if you stay in this hobby. FSM is always my first tool for whatever model can I am working on.

Not taken as a smart *** answer at all. I’m always looking for honest opinions when I ask questions! Next question is where to get the sure grip bits?

You should check the ratio of the gear, it is likely a highway gear and not something fun like 355. as for swapping out the pumpkin. it isn't that difficult and doesn't require any special tools. you do need to check to see if the U joint is the same size as what you have, but even if it isn't there are u joints out there that will fix the size issue. albeit they may be hard to find.

Are we reading the OP?

He doesn't have a loaded carrier to swap in.

Have the 742 carrier, it prob does have high 2 something gears as it’s a standard 65 Newport. I have not taken the carrier off to officially check the ratio. Original metal ID tag is long gone. Used the tire spinning test to tell that is is not a Sure Grip. Does any vendor make new Sure Grip parts for the addition?

Dr
Dr. Diff has some of what you are looking for

Umm... I'm reading "67 Dart 270, 225 slant six" under your avatar. I assume that's the car that the sure grip is headed for.

Does this car (the Dart) have an 8 3/4 rear already? Or is it the 7 1/4 rear I would expect to find under it?

Several different makers offer limited slip units that will "bolt in".

Average price is $500 or more.

New gear set is another around $300.

Then there's the labor (or the learning curve).

You might could find a good used chunk for that same $800, with the operative words being "good" and "might".

Yep! That’s what this Newport donor 8 3/4 is for. The Newport is donating its 383 motor and 727 trans as well. Will have to get the axle housing shortened.
Got the Newport for $350 so can’t pass up the chance to build up the Dart!

OK, the way I was reading it was you were swapping a sure-grip from the '65 into the existing rear end.

It all makes sense now. BTW, don't be afraid to post any '65 Newport parts on FCBO. You could be doing someone a real favor and recouping your $350.

That C body 727 isn't right for your A body.
