I was sooo happy because i finally found a 380hp cam for my 300hp crate , they are hard tp find but some friend freaked out by the chunk missing and others said that it was nothing maybe just a casting default and it can buffed out by a machine shop easily.. some are saying that the previous engine missed oil... long story short i bought a lightly used cam for a roller lifter engine / 360 magnum crate , your opinion guys?

Ken Hear at Oregon Cam Grinders is who you want to talk to. Send him the same pics and see if what you have is a usable core.

I say hit that chit lightly with 400 emery cloth and run hell out of it. It's not like it's tapered like a flat tappet.

Are you refering to the upper edge of the lobe with the red arrow refrence in the picture? The roller doesn't contact there. If it looks like this insted, then you got problems.

I called a machine shop and they say if it was only that theyre was no worries to have since its a roller cam..yes i was refering to the tiny chunck on the lobe (picture )

Uh...... damn!

OP, call the cam grinder, but I bet you can run that til the cows come home. The cams are forged and not machined from billets, it'll be rough in places. Check for loose bits and carry on.

If you really want to do something with it, take it in to your machine shop and ask them to chuck it up in their crank grinder and GENTLY hit it with the crank polisher......but I tell you man, I'd just clean it up and pour the coals to it.

thank you buddy i really appreciate it

I put a new cam in my 95 V8 Dakota, a factory roller, & the original cam that was in it, (motor had never been apart) the cam that came from the factory, had a lobe that looked just like yours. Never had an issue with it & it ran very well. I'd say run it just like it is.

The roller doesnt touch there. I'd clean that spot up with a small file to make sure nothing else is wanting to chip off, then run it.

After all it’s his motor. He can do what he wants with it. He has heard what he wanted to hear. Kim
Honestly, if fine filing/stone grinding the defect away leaves intact metal that appears to have integrity, I'd fine wire wheel that thing & run it. To Your comments, lobes really are a bit suspect in material quality to look at them, can't undo that. And I believe the OP does hope to hear a "good to go", but want's an honest opinion, don't We all?
