$476 to assemble an 8 3/4 diff

Some folks would rather have a known cost than fund an ongoing educational/r&d project. This is a hobby for most; only a few of us have the sickness. Everyone must draw the line somewhere. Think of that before you go all OMFG on the poor guy lol.

exactly.
There are those of us who know our limitations. I can do things others cant do, others can do things i cant do.

First of all, it's not going to be $476. They'll pad the hell out of the bill. Second, it might not be right. Warranty? When somebody asks me about a warranty, I say to them, "Why would you bring it back to me if I screwed it up the first time? Guy brings me an old Mustang C4; says it doesn't shift right, I say, hey it looks like a fresh rebuild..he says ya...I say why not bring it back to that guy? He says, "Cuz I'm tired of takin the GD mf sob cser back out!!!". I found the prob in the time it took me to get the pan off. 72 vb on 69 case. I'm here to help people DIY. If you can afford to pay somebody to do simple stuff like setting up a rearend, maybe you should be looking at a turnkey car. "Come on man!!"

"I've seen young techs screw up"
Exactly, and that is why I do my own work. Even if I have to buy special tools or instruction.
And I am not saying that I never made a mistake, I have, but it is then, my learning opportunity.
i was working on my own cars as a teenager, then went to school then did it as a professional. I've screwed up, it was usually on my own cars LOL! No lie at 16 I bougt a car, mom was like 'who said you could buy a car? as a kid all it was was get a job buy a car so you can cruise at 16 LOL! funny thing is I didnt really get a car on the road legal till 19 LOL!

This is exactly why no one wants to work on old stuff for money. Unless you figure you're time at $25/hr they think they're getting screwed but the same rear end work on a newer Ram would be couple grand with basically same **** (Bearings, Ring & Pinion, Axles, Seals, Etc)

Yeah thing is, most think old cars are "easy" for some reason. I always say "mechanics bitched and complained in 1972 also..." :)

put it this way , right now would you want to do a water pump on an LA small block? easy right? done it many times but do you want to do it right now? Thats the life of a line mechanic. You have to do 5 a day to make good money LOL!

Some of you sound like you need to sell your car and find a hobby you enjoy.

If you want to make 28.00/hr then you have to pay someone else the same. Plus the overhead. Shop insurance isn't cheap, not to mention the taxes and employee insurance.
