Drain Oil!

-
Does anybody remember gas stations selling "Bulk" oil. It was Drain oil that could be used to top off your car. If you were a quart low, they used to say something like, "I can put in a quart of new oil for 50 cents, or a quart of bulk oil for 10 cents."

I've worked for dealerships that used bulk oil, but it wasn't drain oil. It was new, just in large bulk drums. Most dealerships now still have it. That's what comes out of the reels hanging from the shop ceiling. I always liked the convenience of it as a mechanic, but you just never knew "for sure" what it was.

All this talk about oil has reminded me I need to take my used DRAIN OIL lol to the recycling center.

Never heard it called that, but would know what was meant. Been dealing with used oil for 40 yrs.

The solution to pollution is dilution!

It came out of the earth, you are just replenishing the stores.

Not to mention carbon sequestering!
Better get and read a copy of Superman's Not Coming, by Erin Brockovich. Not to mention "dilution is the solution" is a complete fallicy. Not polluting in the first place and proper recycling are the way to proceed.

Not a proper method. Eventually this can migrate into ground water. This is well water people use to wash with, cook and drink.
In 1963 the understanding was not there to comprehend the consequences.
Ever heard of humor?

Years ago I took I operated a shop that allowed consumers to drop off their drain oil... The sign that was given to me by the county "Drain Oil"... but I always say used oil Lol

In 1968 it came in glass containers with a spout, you returned the bottle like pop bottles. It was refined oil (cleaned), oil is and always will be oil, just dirty, what I was told by an oil engineer

Dude, too many people still buy into the dilution solution to be acceptable humor

But it is funny.

If 10ppm is not good but 100ppm is ok then dilution works.

I agree, don't polute. BUT this world will be here LONG after we as a species are gone.

Adapt or die!

:poke:

Ok, day before Thanksgiving, may I inject a bit of charity? Most kids in a chain parts store only know as much about cars as they can find on the company computer. I could tell you some stories! (“Sorry Sir, we don’t show a rocker arm cover gasket for that engine, all I see is a valve cover gasket, that model may not have a rocker arm cover?”) At least he has the ambition to have a job, and he’ll know next time; in fairness, it’s not a common term anymore. Second, the humor in ‘solution to pollution is dilution.’ Well, it still has validity on planet Earth, and it was humor. A joke, and well within the bounds of decency. I think our 2022 will be a lot better if we can all show a bit more tolerance and back off the current trend to cancel, censor, and rebuke, certainly for silly things like a joke about old motor oil on a car site. Happy Thanksgiving, and Merry Christmas! Let’s all be kind.

Try a Limey term on them; rocker box gasket. Should produce a deer in the headlights look.

I agree to a point, but these pollutants build up over time. It is like mercury and lead build up in fish, and even higher consentrations in Eagles and Osprey. The same happens to bears and humans that consume a lot of those fish.
Many water pollutant health problems either show up in children affected in the womb or 25 to 30 years later in adults. Yes the world will be here, but why expose people to debilitating health effects? Remember, you could be the next victim.

What doesn't kill us makes stronger.

Perhaps we will evolve to a place where we consume pollutants and metabolize them to good things.

Like trees and plants learned to do with CO2 and sunlight!

To never know!

Why is it that everything that is natural is good and man made is bad.

Oil well leaks oil into the ocean - bad,

Oil seeps into the ocain naturally - good

Santa Barbara Oil Seeps.

Used oil = drain oil.
Really we're talking about regional language differences. If you ask for a grinder in Connecticut and other places, you'll be handed something you can eat. A grinder here in MD will get you something with a cord or battery.

Drain oil and I take mine to the recycle center which requires you to have it in a container which is easy because it goes into the oil container that my 5 quart new oil came in.

I agree, but remember the names Hooker Chemical and Love Canal? Hooker Chemical followed all laws at the time regarding toxic waste disposal and still got sunk by an overreaching government. Nonetheless, it did end up having good consequences, because of changing laws regarding pollution and waste disposal.

That's what I do and in fact, I'm due to make a run now.
